Daniel Jeremiah 2024 NFL Mock Draft: Maye over Daniels; Raiders Get Michael Penix Jr.

Adam WellsMar 19, 2024

With the Chicago Bears seemingly locked in on Caleb Williams at No. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL draft, the real intrigue starts with the Washington Commanders and the second pick.

NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah has the Commanders taking North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye over 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.

Jeremiah did note he doesn't have "any more clarity" on Washington's pick than he did in his previous mock, which also had Maye going at No. 2.

There doesn't seem to be a consensus for the Commanders at this point, which is fine since there are still five weeks until the draft. They can get an in-person look at Daniels during LSU's pro day on March 27 and Maye at North Carolina's pro day on March 28.

Another notable quarterback-team pairing Jeremiah has is Michael Penix Jr. going to the Las Vegas Raiders with the 13th pick.

"There's an assumption that Penix is more of a second-rounder, but I think his skill set is a unique fit for the Raiders' style of play," Jeremiah wrote.

Marcus Johnson of Silver and Black Pride noted Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce talked about wanting a vertical offense during his introductory press conference. Luke Getsy, who was hired as offensive coordinator in February, attempted to implement that style of play during his two years in that role with the Chicago Bears to mixed results.

If Getsy and Pierce are aligned on wanting to push the ball down the field, Penix fits that style of play. He did it for the past two years at Washington to great results.

Even though the Raiders don't get to bring the Huskies receivers with them that Penix had success with, they're doing OK in that area with Davante Adams on the outside and Michael Mayer at tight end.

The Raiders did sign Gardner Minshew II in free agency, but Pierce has made it clear they are still in the market for another quarterback going into the 2024 season.
