POSITIVES
— Great size and length. Posted some impressive testing numbers at the NFL combine with a 9.93 RAS out of 10.
— Physical and solid strength at the point of attack to help set the edge as a run defender.
— Nearly 37-inch arms can make it easy for him to get off blocks and get tackles near the line of scrimmage when he lands his hands.
— Stays tight to the heel line if he's unblocked against the run and has the speed to make tackles for short gains from the backside.
— Solid rip move helps him beat offensive tackles who have bad feet.
— Hustle player who goes snap to whistle and can factor into gang tackles down the field.
NEGATIVES
— Plays high as a run defender and pass-rusher. Has little knee bend to get a leverage advantage.
— Often wide with hand placement when taking on blocks, limiting the effectiveness of his long arms on a consistent basis.
— Still learning how to use his hands and long arms as a pass-rusher.
— Subpar lateral movement skills and change of direction, hurting his ability to turn speed to power when rushing the passer.
— Will be an older rookie (24) who still needs time to develop.
2023 STATISTICS
— 12 GM, 32 TOT, 3.5 SK, 6.5 TFL, 1 PD
NOTES
— Born April 29, 2000
— 2-star recruit in the 2018 class, per 247Sports
— No major injuries
— Spent four years at UL Monroe before transferring to Texas Tech ahead of the 2022 season
OVERALL
Myles Cole made himself some money at the combine. His measurables, both physically and athletically, give him a ton of potential.
To put it simply, there aren't many guys who are built like him and move like he can. NFL teams will see those numbers and think they can mold Cole into a quality player, making him draftable.
Against the run, Cole is already a solid player who just needs to clean up a few fixable technique issues. As a pass-rusher, he's shown a solid rip move and the potential to turn speed to power with a long-arm move if his change of direction can improve. He has the strength to push through the offensive tackle's inside shoulder, and offensive linemen will have a hard time dealing with his arm length.
However, the former Red Raider's use of hands is currently limiting his pass-rush arsenal. He's still learning how to play the tackle's hands and use his limbs to his advantage. It often seems like he's flailing his arms around with no precision or accuracy.
Overall, Cole is a developmental project despite being an older prospect, which is a bad combination. Questions will arise as to why he still has technical flaws despite spending six years in college. However, he only received two years of Power Five coaching, and teams could be enamored with his potential, elevating his draft stock.
