Former MLB Star Darryl Strawberry Released from Hospital After Heart Attack

Three-time World Series champion Darryl Strawberry was released from the hospital Wednesday evening, two days after suffering a "massive" heart attack, MLB.com's Bill Ladson reported.

The former New York Mets and Yankees player, who turned 62 on Tuesday, shared the news of his recovery in a post on his Instagram.

"I am so happy and honored to report that all is well," Strawberry wrote. "So thankful for the medical team and staff at St. Joseph West in Lake St. Louis for responding so quickly and bringing me through a stent-procedure that has brought my heart to total restoration!!!"

Strawberry was at home in St. Peters, Missouri, when he began feeling chest pain Monday, according to Bob Klapisch of NJ Advance Media. Strawberry credited his wife Tracy with calling an ambulance, per Ladson.

He was already in the ambulance when he suffered the heart attack, and he arrived at the hospital in time for a "life-saving angioplasty," per Klapisch.

Strawberry told Ladson that he has been told by doctors to "take some time off and relax."

"I have a monitor that I have to wear right now so the doctors can keep up with me," Strawberry told Ladson.

When he is healthy again, Strawberry plans to resume working as a traveling minister, per Ladson.

Strawberry also overcame significant health issues during his time as an MLB player. He underwent surgery for colon cancer while playing for the New York Yankees in 1998.

During his 17-year MLB career between 1983 and 1999, Strawberry played for the New York Mets and Yankees in addition to the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.

He won the World Series three times, once with the Mets in 1986 and twice with the Yankees in 1996 and 1999.

The Mets are planning to honor Strawberry's career by retiring his No. 18 on June 1 at Citi Field during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. When announcing the number retirement, team owner Steve Cohen called Strawberry an "iconic" member of the 1986 championship team.
