Sami Zayn is Wrong Guy to Dethrone Gunther, Becky Lynch on Fire, More WWE Raw Takes

Kevin BergeMar 12, 2024

The March 11 edition of WWE Raw continued to build the foundation of the WrestleMania 40 card.

Sami Zayn defeated Bronson Reed, Shinsuke Nakamura and Chad Gable to earn an intercontinental title shot against Gunther. This sets up an exciting match at The Show of Shows, but it may not set up the man who should dethrone The Ring General.

Becky Lynch put on another great bout against Liv Morgan before challenging Nia Jax to a Last Woman Standing match. She is setting the stage for an all-time great contest with Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania.

The Judgment Day found out the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship would be defended at The Show of Shows against multiple teams, which could be the perfect opportunity to reset the men's tag team division.

Candice LeRae made an impression with a scathing and controversial mid-match promo on Maxxine Dupri, breaking her down as an "embarrassment." This could be the last chance to push The Poison Pixie.

This show was packed with big moments and matches that could help create the biggest WrestleMania ever.

Sami Zayn Isn't the Man to Dethrone Gunther

1 of 4

Sami Zayn has competed at the highest level in the last year and has now earned an important spotlight at WrestleMania 40.

Indeed, The Underdog from the Underground and Gunther could steal the show in Philadelphia on April 6-7.

However, it's hard to get truly excited about Zayn dethroning The Ring General despite selling himself as a true world title contender in recent weeks.

Losing his chance at the World Heavyweight Championship was a devastating moment in Zayn's journey, but rebounding by going after the Intercontinental Championship does not feel right.

The Canadian is a three-time IC champion and held the title in 2022 just three months before Gunther began his record-breaking reign.

Winning that title again is not a level up for Zayn, and the man who dethrones the Austrian should truly benefit from that victory.

The most obvious answer would be Chad Gable, who stole the show at the end of Monday's Raw but fell just short of victory.

Becky Lynch Continues to Deliver Best Work of Her Career

2 of 4

Becky Lynch is on the run of a lifetime.

Every time she steps in the ring, she delivers some of the best in-ring work in WWE.

No one is delivering as consistently as The Man, especially in the women's division, and that looks to be continuing into WrestleMania 40.

Her match with Rhea Ripley feels like the women's division equivalent of Bret Hart vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin: The journeyman veteran against the exciting upstart.

While it's unlikely this story will end with an iconic double turn at WrestleMania as in 1997, The Eradicator has a chance to solidify her top star status by keeping up with Lynch at her best.

The Man will be the measuring stick for Ripley, and anything less than one of the greatest women's matches in WWE history would be a disappointment.

Total Reset of Men's Tag Team Scene is Coming

3 of 4

The Raw and SmackDown men's tag team divisions are so stacked that it makes little sense to keep the titles unified.

On the road to WrestleMania 40, there should be a clear story for the belts, but the division feels more scattered than ever.

The SmackDown men's tag division feels left out particularly. While Raw is building Awesome Truth and DIY as feuds for Finn Bálor and Damian Priest, neither has enough credibility to dethrone The Judgment Day.

However, teams like Pretty Deadly and The Street Profits come off as potential challengers that have been kept out of the scene by simply working on the opposite brand.

With a multi-brand ladder match now set for 'Mania, WWE has a chance to refocus the tag team scenes of Raw and SmackDown by breaking up the championships.

This could happen at The Show of Shows if the titles could be individually pulled down for Raw and SmackDown, or the winners of the ladder match voluntarily relinquish the belts designated for the opposite brand.

It is time to get the men's tag team division back on track. There is too much working in the division for just one championship anymore.

WWE Has One Last Chance to Establish Candice LeRae as Top Heel

4 of 4

Pro wrestling often crosses lines between reality and fiction, and Candice LeRae did just that when she brought Maxxine Dupri's late brother into the story of her growing heel turn.

The Poison Pixie has gained more attitude in the last two weeks, but this was a shocking move to happen so quickly. It was an unnecessary escalation of a feud that had barely started.

However, it certainly made an impression. X was buzzing after LeRae flamed Dupri, showing personality in a way she has not in years.

This may be the most that LeRae has been talked about since arriving in WWE. While she still feels relatively new to the main roster scene, she is 38 years old and began her wrestling career over 20 years ago.

There is not much time left for her to compete at her best. If WWE can carry this momentum forward, allowing LeRae to especially stand out as a verbally vicious heel, she could finally reach her potential in the company.
