Xavier Worthy's Historic 40-Yard Dash Cleats Will Go Into Pro Football Hall of Fame
The cleats worn by Texas wide receiver and potential first-round pick Xavier Worthy during his record-setting 4.21-second 40-yard dash will be forever immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Hall requested the cleats and Worthy "obliged."
Worthy broke the previous record set by John Ross (4.22 seconds) at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine.
"I watched the combine my whole life as a kid," he told reporters at the time. "I seen Ross run that. I never thought I would be on the stage to do that. My trainers told me to be patient. You'll peak at the right time."
It took him two attempts to get the record, as he ran a 4.25-second 40 on his first try. He could have stopped there and had an excellent day, given that blazing time, but he decided to go for history.
"I definitely knew I had a chance. I didn't know it was gonna happen in reality. I came in knowing I was gonna run nothing slower than 4.25," he told Tyler Dragon of USA Today. "When I ran a 4.25 on my first one, I knew I was gonna break it. Because when I was training, I always ran faster on my second 40. So, I knew I was gonna run faster on that second 40."
Worthy said his phone was blowing up after the record-setting run, with texts from Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis, former NFL speedster and wideout DeSean Jackson and three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes, among others.
As for when Worthy might be off the board at the NFL draft in April, the B/R NFL Scouting Department ranked him as the No. 50 overall player on its latest big board and projected the Kansas City Chiefs to select him with the final pick of the first round in its latest mock draft.
"On film, Worthy pops off the screen, both with his short-area explosiveness and his long speed," B/R's Derrik Klassen wrote. "He has his deficiencies when it comes to physicality (5'11", 165 pounds) and ball skills, but the natural speed is going to be enough to make him a weapon at the next level. If anyone can unlock that ability, it's Andy Reid and Mahomes."
That would be a dream pairing for Worthy.
"In a perfect world, I definitely would want to go to the Chiefs," he told Dragon. "Just the way Mahomes and the Chiefs improvise and use you. They had Tyreek Hill. The way they used him, I feel like that would be a perfect fit for me."
It remains to be seen where he ends up, but his cleats are on their way to Canton.
