WWE's Biggest Wild Card for WrestleMania 40 Season on Raw and SmackDown Rosters

Philip LindseyMar 8, 2024

WrestleMania season can often be predictable, but the annual event also has its share of surprises.

This year's iteration is no different because most fans expected Cody Rhodes to climb back to the top of the mountain and secure a rematch against Roman Reigns. However, his journey back to The Showcase of the Immortals still came with unexpected twists and turns like CM Punk's improbable return.

Viewers certainly didn't think The Rock would also emerge as an obstacle ahead of his second attempt to finish the story. Elsewhere, Damage CTRL's mutiny has made Bayley's turn a refreshing addition to the company's ongoing storylines.

Considering what else we can anticipate at The Show of Shows, these five superstars could be the biggest wild cards. We can't wait to see how they could factor into the festivities.

Tiffany Stratton

After her breakout performance at Elimination Chamber, most fans have to imagine Tiffany Stratton is on pace to make her first appearance at WrestleMania.

The 24-year-old doesn't have a path to the iconic, but WWE may have to devise plans for her following her reception in Perth. Some have suggested that she could make an ideal option for Bianca Belair, who also doesn't have a dance partner yet.

That would make sense because the two clashed in the lead-up to the women's encounter inside the intimidating steel structure. The Buff Barbie would also be a great replacement for Charlotte Flair, who seemed destined to face the EST before she sustained a knee injury,

During her recent interview with James Delow of the Gorilla Position podcast, Belair said, "The possibilities are endless," but she seemed to welcome the challenge from Stratton or Jade Cargill.

Bron Breakker

Like the former NXT women's champion, Bron Breakker could be a newcomer to keep an eye on on the road to WrestleMania 40.

The second-generation wrestler excelled during his debut in this year's men's Royal Rumble match. Breakker entered the fray as entrant no. 20 and racked up four eliminations, making the most of his jump to a larger stage.

As the newest addition to the SmackDown roster, he has quickly established himself as a superstar with a bright future. The 26-year-old could be a favorite to win the 2024 André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, but it will be interesting to see if he can make a splash for the first time at The Greatest Spectacle in Sports Entertainment.

John Cena

WrestleMania XL is a significant milestone for WWE, and it's hard to believe it could happen without John Cena.

The 16-time world champion had countless moments at the event during his illustrious career, so it would be fitting for him to appear at its 40th-anniversary show. Still, it may be a stretch to assume the 46-year-old will wrestle on this year's card, which will already host The Rock's first match in eight years.

Technically, The Great One hasn't had a full-length match since his second showdown with The Leader of Cenation in 2013. During his recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon asked if the latter would collide with the newest member of The Bloodline in Philadelphia.

In return, Cena jokingly stated, "I know exactly where it is. I'm free that day." Of course, that could be just his way of leaving the door open, but never say never, right?

Sami Zayn

4 of 5

Sami Zayn has been a consummate underdog since he left The Bloodline last year, but he remains one of the most intriguing wild cards heading into WrestleMania weekend.

Long-time fans can't help but root for the affable babyface in his search for validation following a disappointing loss to Roman Reigns in his home country at Elimination Chamber 2023. Zayn proved he could go the distance against The Tribal Chief, but his story isn't over just yet.

If he can outlast the other five participants in next week's gauntlet match, he will punch his ticket to Lincoln Financial Field and attain a chance to dethrone Gunther. It also would be a pleasant surprise to see him earn a spot in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match with Drew McIntyre and Seth Rollins.

After all, the Canadian still has unfinished business with The Scottish Warrior, and he's overdue for a world title win.

Liv Morgan

5 of 5

Liv Morgan has emerged as a wild card since Becky Lynch narrowly defeated her to win the 2024 women's Elimination Chamber match.

The New Jersey native has had a vocal online fanbase for some time, but they grew frustrated when she came so close to exacting revenge on Rhea Ripley. The two teamed up to compete for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship in a fatal four-way at WrestleMania 38.

However, they fell short at the event and unsuccessfully challenged Sasha Banks and Naomi a few weeks later. The Eradicator ultimately turned on Morgan and joined The Judgement Day, setting up her current run as a single competitor.

Her former tag team partner seemingly reignited their feud last July when she cost her and Raquel Rodriguez the women's tag titles. Ripley attacked her again in the following episode of Raw, forcing her to go on a six-month hiatus.

For those reasons, it would make the most sense for the 29-year-old to eventually unseat the Aussie and complete her revenge tour. Nevertheless, The Man already earned an opportunity to end her reign of terror, so how will she factor into the equation?
