NFL Draft 2024 Rumors: Giants 'High' on Drake Maye; Jayden Daniels, McCarthy Linked

zach bacharMar 7, 2024

The New York Giants are reportedly interested in several top quarterback prospects in the 2024 NFL draft, including North Carolina's Drake Maye and LSU's Jayden Daniels (per Connor Hughes of SNY).

"Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels are the two I heard linked to New York the most," Hughes wrote on Thursday. "Maye, specifically, they're high on."

The Giants would likely need to trade up in order to select either quarterback, as they currently own the No. 6 overall pick in the draft.

Hughes also noted that there were "more than a few rumblings" at the scouting combine regarding ties between New York and former Michigan signal-caller J.J. McCarthy.

Although quarterback Daniel Jones is still playing on a four-year, $160 million deal that he signed in March 2023, the front office could target another signal-caller. While general manager Joe Schoen told reporters at the senior bowl that the "expectation is for [Jones] to be the starter" entering training camp, he didn't completely rule out the team drafting some competition.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer noted on Monday that the Giants were asking teams about the possibility of trading up to select a quarterback during the scouting combine.

It might be difficult for New York to trade up for Maye specifically, as he's expected to be gone within the first three picks on April 25. In fact, the most recent big board by Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department ranks the 21-year-old as the No. 1 quarterback in the 2024 class. Daniels and McCarthy may be a bit more realistic as they ranked No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

B/R NFL Scout Derrik Klassen was extremely impressed with Maye, who has thrown for 7,929 yards and 62 touchdowns compared to 16 interceptions over the past two seasons.

"Drake Maye is the prototypical quarterback prospect," Klassen wrote. "Size, speed, arm strength; he's got all the tools you look for in a franchise quarterback."

Even with Jones under contract, it isn't difficult to imagine the possibility of the Giants trading up from the No. 6 spot in order to select one of the top remaining quarterback prospects after USC's Caleb Williams is presumably off the board.
