NFL Rumors: Mitchell Trubisky, Bills Talking Contract in FA After Steelers Exit

Scott PolacekMar 6, 2024

Mitchell Trubisky could be heading back to the Buffalo Bills.

Tim Graham of The Athletic reported Wednesday that the quarterback and AFC East team have held contract discussions. He is available this offseason because the Pittbsurgh Steelers released him last month.

The decision to move on from Trubisky was part of a series of cap-saving moves from Pittsburgh, as ESPN's Brooke Pryor noted the team saved approximately $13 million in 2024 cap space by releasing the quarterback, offensive lineman Chuks Okorafor and punter Pressley Harvin.

Wednesday has been a busy day for the Bills even ahead of rumors about a potential reunion with Trubisky.

Buffalo announced it signed offensive lineman David Edwards and punter Matt Haack while releasing safety Jordan Poyer, defensive back Siran Neal, center Mitch Morse, wide receiver Deonte Harty and running back Nyheim Hines.

ESPN's Adam Schefter noted also plans to release cornerback Tre'Davious White and made significant progress toward getting under the salary cap:

As for Trubisky, he would return to the team in a backup role behind Josh Allen if he did sign in Buffalo. That is the role he played in 2021 for the Bills before he joined the Steelers for the 2022 and 2023 campaigns.

While he started seven combined games for Pittsburgh the last two years, he is still best known for his time on the Chicago Bears. Chicago selected him with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft and infamously passed on the opportunity to draft Patrick Mahomes in the process.

Trubisky found some success with a 29-21 record as a starter with the Bears, but many of those wins came because of the team's strong defense. He ultimately didn't live up to expectations that were put in place on draft day and will likely be a backup wherever he signs in 2024.

That is especially the case if it is with a Bills team that has Allen under center.
