Jey Uso a Future Champ, 2 Wrestlers Most Likely to Win Gauntlet Match, More Raw Takes

Kevin BergeMar 5, 2024

Emanating from the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, the focus of the March 4 edition of Monday Night Raw was building clear challengers for Gunther at WrestleMania XL.

"Dirty" Dominik Mysterio delivered one of his best matches of his career against Gunther but fell short like so many others challenging The Ring General.

Sami Zayn won another big match against Ivar while Chad Gable, Shinsuke Nakamura, Ricochet, Bronson Reed and JD McDonagh made their case to face Gunther.

Beyond the Intercontinental Championship scene, it was an exciting night. Jey Uso challenged Drew McIntyre with all of his focus but was cost another big match by The Bloodline.

This show was another important step in building up WrestleMania.

Jey Uso Needs Memorable Title Reign after WrestleMania

1 of 4

The future is bright for Jey Uso. He competed once again in a WWE main event and looked at home. A sold-out Frost Bank Center crowd was completely behind "Main Event".

While he has yet to get past The Bloodline, it is hard to imagine Jey without championship gold much longer.

He needs to first defeat his brother Jimmy Uso at WrestleMania. Once he settles that conflict, the goal should be to give the title to Jey quickly.

Whether he is the one to dethrone Gunther, takes down Logan Paul or perhaps makes sure Drew McIntyre's reign is short, Jey is one of the most deserving men in WWE to never win a singles championship.

When he does hold a championship, it needs to be a lengthy reign that can solidify his legacy as a solo act.

"Dirty" Dominik Mysterio Makes Strong Case for WrestleMania Spotlight

"Dirty" Dominik Mysterio has consistently matured over the past few years as a wrestler, and that was on full display in the best in-ring performance of his career against Gunther.

While he was never going to seriously challenge The Ring General, he brought his most fiery work to a physical sprint.

He has been in the business for a long time. He knows what it means to be in WrestleMania season. His performance showed that.

With recent WrestleMania announcements, the most likely path for Dirty Dom is challenging Andrade at The Show of Shows. If this can fit on the card, it could steal the show.

El Idolo has history with his father Rey Mysterio and idolizes Eddie Guerrero, who was as close as family to Dom. There is a story to tell here with two men competing at their peak.

The 2 Options Who Must Win Gauntlet Match Next Week

The plan for Gunther at WrestleMania XL continues to shift in focus, but WWE may have finally revealed how it will all come together.

Adam Pearce announced that Sami Zayn, Chad Gable, Shinsuke Nakamura, Bronson Reed, Ricochet and JD McDonagh would compete in a gauntlet match to crown the WrestleMania No. 1 contender.

None of these names are going to obviously dethrone The Ring General, but WWE has shown time and again that a wrestler can be heated up quickly with the right booking.

The two best wrestlers to face Gunther at WrestleMania would be Zayn and Gable. Whichever man is leaving next week's Raw at The Show of Shows needs to come off as a major star.

Zayn is one of the top babyfaces in WWE, and he has not had his big premium live event shot at The Ring General. He would sell the story of his championship dream against Raw's final boss.

Gable's story with Gunther is clear. He promised to win the Intercontinental Championship for his family. Instead, they were left crying after his title loss. He wants this for personal reason that can elevate his case.

Whichever man walks out needs a serious run in the gauntlet match. They could emulate Kofi Kingston's run to WrestleMania 35, beating multiple top names to earn the big shot that they have been denied in the past.

No one else can tell a story worthy of WrestleMania with Gunther than Zayn or Gable. Both have a unique claim that could make for a very special WrestleMania moment.

WWE Commentary Has Improved Immensely with Pat McAfee

4 of 4

Three hours of Raw a week can be tough to follow, but presentation can make the difference. WWE has seriously improved its presentation lately to make Raw more exciting.

One of the biggest changes was bringing back Pat McAfee on commentary. He has added a sports focus to the product including using instant replay and WWE's telestrator.

He also is unafraid to work with Michael Cole to promote the broader professional wrestling scene, even making mention of Sting's retirement on Sunday.

These touches had a realistic flair to WWE that has been sorely missing in past years.

Hopefully, WWE will lean into this style all the more and keep using McAfee's unique perspective.
