Red Sox Rumors: MLB Execs Think Jordan Montgomery Will Sign FA Contract with Boston

Andrew PetersMar 3, 2024

MLB executives believe free agent starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery will sign with the Boston Red Sox, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

"MLB team executives widely believe that two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell will ultimately sign with the Los Angeles Angels or possibly the San Francisco Giants, while Texas Rangers' postseason hero Jordan Montgomery will wind up with the Boston Red Sox," Nightengale wrote. "The Red Sox have kept in constant contact with Montgomery while the Rangers are keeping tabs if owner Ray Davis suddenly changes his mind."

Montgomery, who was traded to the Texas Rangers from the St. Louis Cardinals in July last year, had 21 starts last season, notching 166 strikeouts and a 3.20 ERA.

Montgomery was huge in the Rangers' World Series run, starting six games and picking up 17 strikeouts and a 2.90 ERA across 31 innings. He helped lead Texas to a pair of shutouts against the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros and was credited with three wins.

Montgomery signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Cardinals in 2023 before being traded, but he's looking for a long-term deal this free agency. The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported in January that Montgomery is looking for a contract that would top Aaron Nola's seven-year, $172 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Montgomery's number might have come down given that he still hasn't landed with a team, but it's clear he's looking for a lengthy deal.

The veteran proved his worth with a big postseason in 2023, now it seems Boston could be the favorite to land him.
