FedEx Field to be Named Commanders Field After Naming Contract Ends

zach bacharMar 3, 2024

The Washington Commanders' stadium will be called Commanders Field, as it was previously known as FedEx Field before the naming contract ended (per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post).

The original agreement for naming rights with FedEx was set to expire in 2026, although the shipping company exercised an opt-out provision in the deal before the end of 2023 (via Jhabvala and Mark Maske of The Washington Post). For now, the field will share the same name as the team instead.

Although FedEx chose to end the naming-rights agreement, the company's separate partnership with the team remains intact. Per Jhabvala and Maske, FedEx's decision to exercise the opt-out provision was the result of the sale of the team in July 2023. The Commanders were purchased by a group led by Josh Harris for $6.05 billion.

The updated field name may not last long, though. The team revealed that new naming rights partners are already being considered in a statement to the Washington Post.

"We have already started the process of identifying our next stadium naming rights partner — a partner who will play a crucial role in ushering in the next era of not only Commanders football, but also a robust slate of top live events and concerts."

The team, under the new ownership group, is already in the process of attempting to get a new stadium built. The future location is not yet known.

However, the Commanders announced more upgrades to the existing stadium on Tuesday which brought the targeted investments in improving the stadium and fan experience to a total of more than $75 million since the team was purchased.

This includes improved sound quality as well as upgraded food and beverage service at the newly-named Commanders Field.
