NFL Rumors: Giants Have All QB Options 'On the Table' Ahead of 2024 Draft

Mike ChiariMar 2, 2024

The New York Giants are reportedly expected to explore the possibility of taking a quarterback early in the 2024 NFL draft.

According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, all options are "on the table" for the G-Men when it comes to potentially upgrading the quarterback position.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic later reported league sources believe Giants general manager Joe Schoen "would pull the trigger" on a trade to move up to No. 3 and that "the sense around the league is that this regime feels urgency to add a quarterback entering a pivotal third season."

The Giants own the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, and they will reportedly consider taking a quarterback at that spot, trading into the top five to take one or using their two second-round picks to trade back into the latter portion of the first round to take one.

After missing the playoffs in five straight seasons, the Giants hired Brian Daboll as their new head coach prior to the 2022 season, and he helped lead a huge turnaround.

New York went 9-7-1 that season, reached the playoffs and beat the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card Round.

Running back Saquon Barkley had a resurgent season, racking up 1,650 total yards and 10 touchdowns en route to a Pro Bowl selection, and quarterback Daniel Jones had the best year of his career.

Daboll kept things simple and didn't ask Jones to do too much, which allowed him to complete 67.2 percent of his passes for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns and just five interceptions, while also rushing for 708 yards and seven scores.

That production prompted the Giants to sign Jones to a new four-year, $160 million contract.

Expectations were high for Jones and the Giants in their second season under Daboll, but things went awry in 2023.

New York went just 6-11 and missed the playoffs, and injuries limited Jones to only six games. Duggan noted "there's real concern" about Jones' injury history inside the Giants and around the NFL.

Even when he was healthy, Jones struggled mightily, going just 1-5 as a starter and completing 67.5 percent of his passing attempts for 909 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions to go along with 206 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Veteran journeyman Tyrod Taylor and undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito combined to start 11 games in Jones' absence, and they both outperformed him, combining to go 5-6 with 13 touchdown passes and six interceptions.

The Giants are essentially stuck with Jones on the roster this season due to the amount of dead cap they would incur by cutting or trading him, but there is a palatable out after 2024, so it makes sense to potentially prepare for life after Jones now.

USC's Caleb Williams, LSU's Jayden Daniels and North Carolina's Drake Maye are widely viewed as the top three quarterbacks in the draft, but they seem likely to come off the board with the top three picks, so something unexpected would have to happen in order for New York to get any of them.

If the Giants stay at No. 6 or trade down slightly, Michigan's J.J. McCarthy could be an option on the heels of him leading Michigan to an undefeated season and national title in 2023.

Other quarterbacks who could be on the Giants' radar later in the first round or in the second round include Oregon's Bo Nix, Washington's Michael Penix Jr. and South Carolina's Spencer Rattler.

The Giants are in a tough position since they probably won't get one of the elite quarterback talents in the draft, but if they like one of the other signal-callers enough, Raanan's report suggests that they won't hesitate to go after him despite Jones' contract status.
