Shohei Ohtani's Marriage Surprised Dodgers, Manager Dave Roberts Says

Andrew PetersFeb 29, 2024

Shohei Ohtani announced his marriage on social media Thursday, and the news came as a surprise to many, including Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

According to ESPN, Roberts said that neither he nor the Dodgers had sent Ohtani and his bride a wedding gift yet because he was surprised to find out about their marriage.

"I'm very happy for him and his bride," Roberts said. "As far as wedding gifts, we got surprised and didn't have much time to think about it. I'm sure it's en route."

While Ohtani announced his marriage on Thursday, it's not clear when the star said "I do." His comments on Thursday indicate that his marriage could have happened much earlier.

"She is a Japanese woman," Ohtani said through an interpreter. "I don't really feel comfortable talking about when I got married exactly, but she's a normal Japanese woman."

Ohtani's wife, whom he said he has known for three or four years, was supportive during his free agency, when he drew historical bids from teams across the league, ultimately landing with the Dodgers on a 10-year, $700 million contract.

"She has a great understanding of my profession, and she's willing to be wherever I wanted to play, and ultimately it was my decision," Ohtani said.

Now hitched in the offseason, Ohtani is gearing up for his first season with the Dodgers. He's coming off an MVP season where he hit .304, notching 44 home runs and 95 RBI, and he'll be looking to have similar numbers this year.
