Tim Wakefield died on Oct. 1 at the age of 57. His former Red Sox teammate, Curt Schilling, publicly disclosed that Tim and Stacy had been diagnosed with different types of cancer on an episode of his podcast in October.

In a statement responding to Schilling's comments issued by the Red Sox on behalf of the Wakefield family, they did not want the diagnoses to be made public:

"We are aware of the statements and inquiries about the health of Tim and Stacy Wakefield. Unfortunately, this information has been shared publicly without their permission. Their health is a deeply personal matter they intended to keep private as they navigate treatment and work to tackle this disease."

Stacy shared a message written by Tim after his death:

The couple were married in November 2002 after meeting in Massachusetts. They are survived by their two children, Trevor and Brianna.

After starting his MLB career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tim Wakefield was released early in the 1995 season. He signed as a free agent with the Red Sox and became a mainstay for the club until his retirement in February 2012.

Wakefield is the Red Sox's all-time leader in games started (430) and innings pitched (3,006). He won two World Series titles with the club in 2004 and 2007.
