Knicks Rumors: Latest Buzz on Julius Randle, OG Anunoby Injury Return Timelines

Adam WellsFeb 27, 2024

As the New York Knicks try to keep their head above water with a banged-up roster, there is some good news on the horizon for their injured players.

On FanDuel TV's Run it Back, Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium said Julius Randle's rehab is "going well" and his goal is to play again this season.

The Knicks are hopeful that OG Anunoby will "be back on the floor" within the next two to three weeks.

Randle is the biggest question mark for the Knicks as he recovers from a dislocated shoulder. The injury occurred late in the fourth quarter of New York's 125-109 win over the Miami Heat on Jan. 27. He fell to the ground on a drive to the basket when Heat forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. stepped into his path while attempting to draw a charge.

The Knicks announced on Feb. 1 that Randle would be reevaluated in two to three weeks. While speaking to reporters last week, the three-time All-Star said he's feeling "better and stronger" with the goal of returning before the end of the regular season.

Randle also acknowledged surgery remains a possibility, and he's heard "many different opinions" about the best path forward.

"I mean, we'll see. There's still necessary steps. It's a process to everything. I have to weigh out everything ultimately and decide from there," Randle said. "But right now I'm just focused on trying to avoid [surgery], obviously, and get back on the court as soon as I can."

It's unclear if surgery would be season-ending, but there are only six weeks remaining in the regular season before the playoffs begin.

Things seem much more hopeful for Anunoby, whose last appearance was also in that win over Miami. He had surgery to remove a loose bone fragment in his right elbow on Feb. 8, and doctors would re-evaluate him in three weeks.

Anunoby was playing at a high level in 14 games for the Knicks after being acquired in a Dec. 30 trade with the Toronto Raptors. He was averaging 15.6 points on 51.6 percent shooting, 4.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game prior to the injury.

The Knicks have lost six of their last nine games, but they remain 1.5 games ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers for the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference standings.
