NBA Rumors: Danilo Gallinari Contract Interests Suns After Pistons Exit

Scott PolacekFeb 13, 2024

The Phoenix Suns are reportedly eyeing additional depth ahead of the playoffs.

While ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Phoenix is "finalizing a deal" with veteran Thaddeus Young after he was traded from the Toronto Raptors to the Brooklyn Nets and then waived by the Nets, the team might not be done.

Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic reported the Suns are also interested in Danilo Gallinari, who was waived by the Detroit Pistons.

With Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, the Suns have the star power to compete with any team in a single playoff series.

Yet they have championship aspirations and will likely need better depth to accomplish that goal. Durant, Beal, Devin Booker, Grayson Allen, Eric Gordon and Jusuf Nurkić are the only players on the roster who have averaged more than 18 minutes per game this season.

Enter Young and perhaps Gallinari as veteran pieces who can help anchor the second unit or perhaps even start depending on matchups.

Gallinari has bounced around during his career with stops on the New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Atlanta Hawks, Washington Wizards and Pistons.

There was a time when he was a go-to scorer who averaged 19.8 points per game in 2018-19 and during a stretch where he averaged at least 15 points a night in five consecutive seasons. However, he didn't play in 2022-23 because of an ACL injury and hasn't quite been the same player this season.

He averaged 7.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 32 games for the Wizards and Pistons this season. The numbers don't jump off the page, but he did connect on 35.5 percent of his three-pointers and sports a career 38.2 percent clip from deep.

Gallinari can still be someone who takes advantage of the spacing created by the defensive attention Durant, Booker and Beal draw with that outside shooting, which could help swing a playoff game or perhaps even a series in the best-case scenario for the Suns.
