NBA Rumors: Warriors Show Desperation by Wanting to Sign Nate Robinson

Ryan RudnanskyJan 4, 2012

Golden State Warriors head coach Mark Jackson has preached defense ever since arriving in Oakland.

That's why the expected signing of guard Nate Robinson, despite the Warriors' needs in the backcourt, doesn't make any sense.

Make no mistake about it, Robinson's primary function is as a scorer off the bench. In that regard, he could help out a backcourt that includes Ish Smith and rookies Klay Thompson and Charles Jenkins.

But the Warriors' problem has never been offense. Thompson, who was supposed to spell relief for Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry, is a scorer himself.

That's why I don't understand this move, especially after the Warriors appeared to be on the right track looking at big man Kyrylo Fesenko, who was a defensive presence if anything else.

The Warriors reportedly have pulled out of talks for Fesenko, primarily because he needed an extra week or two to get back in game shape after September knee surgery.

But what's two weeks when you can improve defensively in the post, a problem the Warriors have had to deal with for years?

It gives you the idea that this franchise still doesn't know what it's doing. It's been to the playoffs a grand total of one time the past 17 seasons. While the high-octane style of offense lends to plenty of ticket sales, everybody knows you can't go far on the court without some semblance of defense. Well, everybody but Warriors management, apparently.

Even under the defensive-minded Jackson, the Warriors apparently still can't grasp that defense is their main problem. If a historian was looking back at the Warriors' last 17 seasons, he probably would have had a nervous breakdown by now figuring out why the Warriors haven't learned from history.

Moves like this make Warriors fans skeptical about new management.
