Cristobal Del Solar Shoots 57, Breaks Record for PGA Tour-Sanctioned Event

Thirty-year-old golfer Cristobal Del Solar carded the lowest-ever score in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event on Thursday, recording a 13-under 57.

He accomplished this feat during the opening round of the Korn Ferry Tour's Astara Golf Championship in Colombia.

"Now, when you go onto a course like this, you don't think, 'I'm going to shoot 57.' You just go out there and do your best and hope it's a really low score," Del Solar said, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach. "You've still got to do it, obviously."

The previous record in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event was held by Jim Furyk and Stephan Jaeger, who both shot a 58 on separate occasions in 2016. Jaeger completed his historic round at the Ellie Mae Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour, while Furyk earned the accomplishment during the Travelers Championship.

While Del Solar appreciated the exceptional score, he credited the course which measured 6,254 yards at just under 9,000 feet of elevation. Due to the wet conditions that included rain earlier in the week, players were allowed to lift and place their balls under preferred lie rules.

"It was a very short course, I mean really short," he said, via Schlabach. "[There were] a lot of holes that were drivable; I wouldn't say drivable, but within 20 yards of the green. I wouldn't necessarily get on the green, but I was around it. The course was definitely set up to shoot a low score."

He carded nine birdies and two eagles in the round as a whole, failing to record a bogey. This included birdies on the No. 14 and No. 15 holes before he nearly recorded another on his final hole that would have resulted in a score of 56, but a six-foot putt barely missed.

He currently holds a four-stroke lead following the momentous opening round in the Astara Championship.
