Red Sox to Star in Netflix Series on 2024 MLB Season; 2004 WS Team to Get Documentary

Even though Boston Red Sox fans are disgruntled with their team right now, Netflix is also banking on them being interested in watching a documentary about the club.

Netflix announced a docuseries chronicling the 2024 Red Sox that will premiere on the streaming service in 2025.

On a happier note for Red Sox Nation, in the same announcement, Netflix is also premiering a documentary later this year about the 2004 team that broke the Curse of the Bambino to win the franchise's first World Series title in 86 years.

Netflix has been expanding its presence in the sports arena in recent years. Formula 1: Drive to Survive, which debuted in 2019, is widely credited with increasing the popularity of the sport.

The streaming giant got into business with the NFL last year with the debut of Quarterback. The documentary series followed around Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota during the 2022 season.

Netflix's partnership with the Red Sox marks its first deal with an MLB club. Details about the series will likely be made available as the season goes along, but the announcement does note it will include "unprecedented access" to players, coaches and executives on the team.

It's certainly an interesting time for the Red Sox, though that's not necessarily good. CEO Sam Kennedy and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow were booed by the crowd at the team's annual fan convention in January.

Kennedy told reporters prior to the event they were expecting to have a lower payroll this season than in 2023 when they finished last in the American League East.

Expectations are muted for the 2024 Red Sox, but that could lead to a compelling documentary because of the high-pressure environment that comes with playing in Boston.

The 2004 Red Sox might be the most beloved sports team in Boston history. They are still the only team in MLB history to overcome a 3-0 deficit in a postseason series when they won four straight games against the New York Yankees in the ALCS.

Boston carried that momentum into the World Series by sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals in four games to win the franchise's first championship since 1918.
