NFL Rumors: 49ers' Klint Kubiak to Be Hired as Saints' OC Under Dennis Allen

Julia StumbaughFeb 2, 2024

The New Orleans Saints are "working" on making San Francisco 49ers passing game specialist Klint Kubiak their offensive coordinator for 2024, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The deal cannot be finalized until after Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11, Schefter noted.

Kubiak is in his first season with the 49ers after working as the Denver Broncos' passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022.

He has previous OC experience with the Minnesota Vikings, where he succeeded his father Gary Kubiak by taking the position in 2021.

Kubiak will take the place of Pete Carmichael, who had worked with the Saints organization for 18 seasons before reportedly taking a position with the Denver Broncos, according to NOLA.com's Jeff Duncan.

The Saints' offense struggled in 2022 during Carmichael's first year as the team's primary play caller, averaging 19.4 points per game (22nd in the NFL) en route to a 7-10 overall record.

Although team scoring improved to 23.6 points per game in 2023 during Carmichael's second year as the full-time play-caller, the Saints ended up missing the playoffs for a third straight season, leading to the franchise parting ways from Carmichael alongside three other assistant coaches.

Like Carmichael, Kubiak has play-calling experience. He played that role with the Vikings in 2021, then took over the mic for the Broncos after Nathaniel Hackett turned the job over following the team's 3-6 start to the 2022 season.

Those stints had mixed results. The Vikings had a middling offense in 2021 (12th in the league with 362.8 offensive yards per game, 15th with an average of 25.0 points.) The Broncos' offensive output increased under Kubiak, but increased even more when former Denver offensive coordinator Justin Outten called plays for two games at the end of the season.

In addition to Kubiak's experience behind the microphone, his collegiate ties might have helped secure him the position in New Orleans.

Kubiak spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Texas A&M, where his father worked as running backs coach from 1992 to 1993 while Saints head coach Dennis Allen was playing for the Aggies.
