Andy Reid Responds to Kadarius Toney Video, Says Chiefs Didn't Make Up Injury

Joseph ZuckerJan 29, 2024

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid disputed the notion the team fabricated the justification for placing wide receiver Kadarius Toney on their injury report.

"He's been on the injury report, (so) that part is not made up by any means," Reid told reporters Monday.

In an Instagram Live video, Toney told fans he was "not hurt" and said the Chiefs were presenting false information about his status. He maintained his position later in the day:

The 25-year-old last suited up in Week 15. Here's how the team listed him in its injury report since then:

  • Week 16: Out (hip)
  • Week 17: Out (hip)
  • Week 18: Out (hip/ankle)
  • Wild Card Round: Questionable (hip/ankle)
  • Divisional Round: Out (hip/ankle)
  • Conference Championship: Questionable (hip)

Ahead of their 17-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC title game on Sunday, the Chiefs included "personal reasons" in the report, with Pro Football Talk reporting Toney's daughter was born Saturday.

Toney's availability for LVIII on Feb. 11 against the San Francisco 49ers remains unclear. Reid said he'll practice with the team but didn't go beyond that.

Kansas City's collective success contrasts sharply with how the 2021 first-round pick has performed this year. He caught 27 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown, and more attention was drawn to the throws he didn't catch.

Not to mention, Toney's most meaningful contribution so far was the offsides penalty he received to nullify an improbable go-ahead touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in December.

Challenging the Chiefs over his playing designation adds another subplot to his season, and it's something that could get the team in hot water with the league.

The NFL fined the Atlanta Falcons $75,000 and coach Arthur Smith $25,000 for failing to properly disclose running back Bijan Robinson was feeling less than 100 percent for a Week 7 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
