Knicks Trade Rumors: Quentin Grimes Linked to Wizards, Hawks, Jazz Ahead of Deadline

Jack MurrayJan 27, 2024

The New York Knicks figure to be pretty busy ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline and guard Quentin Grimes appears to be among the team's most notable trade chips.

Ian Begley of SNY reported that Grimes is "in the middle of all of it" when it comes to the team's trade deadline talks. Interested teams include the Atlanta Hawks, Washington Wizards and Utah Jazz, and Grimes himself is aware of the rumors and said he is just trying to tune them out.

"I've kind of been in trade rumors since my rookie year. So I just try to come in every day, do my job, be professional," Grimes said, per Begley. "Every time I step on the court, just give it 100 percent. Rumors are going to happen. I just step on the court and try to do everything to help this team win."

Begley reported that the Knicks are in search of a "secondary ball-handler off the bench" or a "backup big man" to shore up the roster depth and prepare for a postseason run. Some names that could be attractive for New York would be Wizards center Daniel Gafford or Hawks forward A.J. Griffin, but the market should have numerous available options that could fit the teams needs.

Grimes is averaging 7.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 42 games this season. He has only started 18 of those games. This is a reduced role from last season, where he started 66 of the 71 games he played in, and his statistics have fallen a bit as well as he averaged 11.3, 3.2 and 2.1 in 2022-23.

Still, the 23-year-old has plenty of time to develop and could see success in an increased role with another franchise. He would likely get that with any of the three teams mentioned, and the potential return could allow the Knicks to bolster their roster as the franchise readies for a deep postseason run.
