Mel Kiper 2024 NFL Draft Big Board: Caleb Williams, Marvin Harrison Jr. Top Rankings
While four teams are focused on the AFC and NFC Championships coming up this weekend, much of the NFL has shifted its attention to the 2024 draft as we inch closer to April.
ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. unveiled his latest 2024 NFL mock draft on Monday, and the players he has listed being selected within the top five come as little surprise.
USC quarterback Caleb Williams remains the projected No. 1 overall pick in Kiper's mock draft, followed by Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. at No. 2 and UNC signal-caller Drake Maye at No. 3.
Here's a look at Kiper's top 10:
- Caleb Williams, QB, USC
- Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State
- Drake Maye, QB, UNC
- Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU
- Rome Odunze, WR, Washington
- Malik Nabers, WR, LSU
- Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame
- Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia
- Olumuyiwa Fashanu, OT, Penn State
- Dallas Turner, OLB, Alabama
With immense offensive talent in this year's draft class, it's no surprise the top nine picks in Kiper's mock draft are offensive players.
Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, had a solid 2023 campaign despite USC's struggles. He completed 68.6 percent of his passes for 3,633 yards and 30 touchdowns against five interceptions in 12 games, in addition to rushing for 142 yards and 11 scores.
The 22-year-old is often praised for his playmaking ability, which is part of the reason why he's atop Kiper's latest mock draft.
Kiper wrote of Williams:
"Williams is a fabulous playmaker, and there are "wow" throws all over his tape, even going back to his freshman season at Oklahoma. He's incredible escaping the pocket and making off-platform throws, excelling when plays break down. His improvisational skills are off the charts -- it's incredible how he can make the first defender miss and create first downs out of thin air. He has great field vision and throws dimes to receivers while under duress. He's incredibly creative, which is not something we can usually say of quarterbacks."
Harrison, meanwhile, is considered the best non-quarterback available in this year's class. If quarterback play wasn't so highly valued in today's game, it's very possible the Ohio State product could have won the 2023 Heisman.
Harrison posted his second consecutive 1,000-plus yard receiving season in 2023, catching 67 passes for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns in 12 games. He also rushed for 26 yards and a score on two carries.
The 21-year-old, who is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison, has all of the tools to be successful at the next level, and he figures to be a game-changer for whichever franchise drafts him.
Kiper wrote of Harrison:
"I have an elite grade on Harrison, whose name should be familiar. His dad is that Marvin Harrison, whom I scouted coming out of Syracuse in 1996 and is now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The younger Harrison is on track to get my highest pre-draft grade for a wideout since Calvin Johnson (2007) and Larry Fitzgerald (2004). Harrison has everything, from outstanding size and stellar hands to incredible body control and blazing speed. His dad ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash before the 1996 draft but was just under 6 feet when the Colts took him in Round 1. Harrison Jr. is four inches taller and could have similar speed."
Maye has long been considered one of the top quarterbacks in the 2024 class, but he remains a step behind Williams despite also putting together a solid 2023 campaign.
The 21-year-old had a solid 2023 campaign, completing 63.3 percent of his passes for 3,608 yards and 24 touchdowns against nine interceptions in 12 games, in addition to rushing for 449 yards and nine scores.
Maye is often praised for his accuracy and ability to move the ball with his legs.
Kiper wrote of the UNC product:
"Maye had a fantastic debut season as the starter at UNC, throwing for 4,321 yards with 38 touchdowns and seven picks in 2022. He looks the part of a big-time NFL signal-caller. He can make every throw with ease. He's accurate on the move and can pick up first downs with his legs. Maye varies his pass speeds really well -- he knows when to take a little off to make it easier for his receivers. He has outstanding touch on vertical throws."
For comparison, the Bleacher Report NFL Scouting Department has Harrison as the top overall prospect available in the 2024 class, followed by Bowers, Maye and then Williams.
