Aponte has served in that position since 2017. Prior to that, she worked as an executive for the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets.
Aponte had been viewed as a potential general manager candidate ahead of this season's cycle, and would become the first female NFL general manager and just the second female general manager across the four American major professional sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA) if hired.
The Chargers fired general manager Tom Telesco alongside head coach Brandon Staley in December after a 5-9 start to the regular season. Los Angeles would lose its three remaining games, going 5-12 on the season and finishing in last place in the AFC West.
Despite the record, the Chargers have a talented roster. This includes quarterback Justin Herbert as well as Derwin James, Joey Bosa and Rashawn Slater. The franchise reached the playoffs in 2022 and could have a huge turnaround in 2024 with the right leadership.
