Kyrie Irving Has the Potential to Be Better NBA Point Guard than John Wall

Matt ShetlerJun 7, 2018

Looking back at the past two NBA drafts, a pair of point guards were taken No. 1 overall in John Wall and Kyrie Irving.

Coming out of college, two different players and two totally different situations.

Wall had a fantastic one season at Kentucky and was the clear cut top player on the board when the Washington Wizards chose him No. 1 overall. Irving, on the other hand, played a mere 11 games at Duke as wasn't a clear-cut choice for the Cavaliers at No. 1. Looking back at the draft, you can still make the case that he shouldn't have been the first guy off the board.

While all that may be true, comparing the two players, Irving has the potential to be the better overall player.

Both guys will put up similar numbers throughout their careers, and Wall is likely more of a pure scorer, but Irving can score as well.

Wall is fantastic in transition because of his speed, but his in-between game needs some work and may never be real good.

Compared to Wall, Irving will and may already be the better all-around shooter.

Both guys also have the ability to break down defenses, and both are good facilitators so far in their young NBA careers.

The thing that could possibly separate Irving from Wall is that he's more of a true point guard and will grow to be even better. Though it's only been five NBA games for Irving, he already takes much better care of the ball compared to Wall. He's also more of a floor general and a leader, which, down the road, will make him one of the better guards in the league.

The biggest difference, though, is that, when the Wizards aren't getting their transition game going, Wall often struggles. Irving, on the other hand, can excel in both the open court or half-court games.

While Wall is the better option at the moment, shortly down the road, Irving has the potential to be the better player.
