3 Takeaways from Eagles' Week 12 Win vs. Bills

Joe TanseyNov 27, 2023

The Philadelphia Eagles authored a second straight incredible comeback to become the first NFL team to reach 10 wins on Sunday.

Philadelphia's late-game heroics against the Buffalo Bills were even more stunning than the second-half play against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jalen Hurts and the offense woke up from a sluggish first half with an answer for every Buffalo score, while the defense came up with a few vital involvements to flip the course of the game.

The Eagles used a game-tying 59-yard field goal from Jake Elliott to send the game into overtime and won the contest on a Hurts touchdown run after the defense held the Bills to a field goal.

The win allowed the Eagles to keep their two-game buffer over the San Francisco 49ers on top of the NFC, which is vital ahead of their Week 13 clash in Philadelphia.

Jalen Hurts, Eagles Offense Rebounded from Brutal First Half

The Eagles offense did little right in the first 30 minutes against the Bills.

Philadelphia turned in one nice touchdown drive, but it had two punts and a pair of turnovers around before and after the scoring series.

The Eagles looked hopeless and without an answer for Lane Johnson's absence at right tackle.

Then everything changed once the second half began. D'Andre Swift came alive in the ground game and Hurts hit DeVonta Smith for a few key throws.

Hurts had a stretch in the second half in which three of his four pass attempts were touchdown throws.

The Eagles provided an answer for everything the Bills threw at them in the second half, and that led to overtime.

The home side drove 34 yards in 90 seconds to set up Elliott's game-tying kick and then it won the game on a nine-play, 75-yard drive that ended in a Hurts touchdown run.

The bounce-back showing in the second half proved the Eagles can deal with anything that is thrown at them, and that makes them an even stronger Super Bowl contender than last season.

Elliott had the elements going against him in the buildup to his game-tying kick in the fourth quarter.

Rain fell for most of the second half and there was a bit of wind on the 59-yard attempt.

Elliott perfectly measured the left-to-right kick and gave the Eagles a chance to win the game in overtime.

The 59-yard make moved Elliott to 4-for-4 on kicks of 58 yards or longer and 8-for-8 on kicks under two minutes or in overtime to tie or give the Eagles the lead, per the 33rd Team's Ari Meirov.

Elliott's success in late-game situations should come about one or two more times this season, and if he continues to make kicks like that, the Eagles will win a few more tight games.

Eagles Defense Produced Incredible Performance

The Eagles defensive performance was the reason they were only down 10 points at halftime.

Philadelphia managed to contain Josh Allen on a handful of first-half possessions to prevent the game from getting away from the home side.

The Eagles did not come up with any first-half turnovers, but they did force three punts and blocked a field goal to keep the game within reach.

In the second half, the Eagles produced a game-changing interception in between third-quarter touchdowns and they got enough pressure on Allen to slow him down on other drives.

The defensive pressure made its final impact on Buffalo's last third down, as Allen was forced to release the ball quickly and missed Gabe Davis. That incompletion made the Bills settle for a field goal and it allowed the Eagles to get the ball back.

Without the defensive stops, the Eagles would not even be in a position to produce a come-from-behind win, and that unit will be needed again on Sunday to contain the 49ers.
