5 Reasons the NHL Should Have Its Own Reality Show

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

The NHL should definitely have its own reality show to really expand its brand into the entertainment field.

There's no shortage of interesting characters in hockey, and many players and coaches would be hilarious in a television setting.

Let's look at five reasons why the NHL should have its own reality TV show in the future.

The NFL Season Will Soon Be over

1 of 5

With the NFL season concluding in early February, the only major North American sports that will be playing are the NBA and NHL.

I don't know about you, but listening to NFL draft experts and reading mock drafts gets really boring after a while.

The NHL should take advantage of no pro or college football and create a reality show to get some buzz going before the playoffs start in April.

The NHL Has Many Characters and Personalities

2 of 5

The NHL has many characters and personalities that would be perfect fits on some sort of reality show.

Ilya Bryzgalov, Patrick Kane, Sean Avery and Brad Marchand are just four of many players who would be hilarious to watch on any kind of reality show.

A lot of these players do crazy things in the summer, especially those who win the Stanley Cup, so creating a summer show to keep the players busy and fans interested in hockey during the offseason would be a good idea.

NHL Should Build on the Success of HBO's 24/7

3 of 5

HBO's 24/7 series for the Winter Classic is awesome, and it gives fans a unique look into the daily lives of their favorite team's players and coaches.

It really is an awesome show, there's no other way to say it. The success of 24/7 proved that hockey fans and even non-NHL fans will tune into hockey coverage that isn't about actual games.

The NHL should take advantage of the 24/7 success and see if HBO wants to do another kind of TV show.

There Are Many Ideas for a Reality TV Show

4 of 5

There are many exciting ideas for a hockey reality TV show, especially since the NHL has so many players with interesting personalities.

Let's look at a few ideas:

  • Show based around summer celebrations of Stanley Cup winning team
  • Survivor Series based show
  • Ilya Bryzgalov's own show (He would make it work)
  • Show that highlights what players do in the offseason
  • Player X vs. (Like ABC's Shaq vs., where fans go against a sports star in different activities)

Please feel free to share your own ideas in the comment section.

The NHL Needs to Grab the Attention of Fans Better

5 of 5

The NHL's appeal is better than it was immediately following the lockout, but there is still a lot more the league can do to market its product to an even bigger audience.

A lot of people don't even have the new NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus), and the league needs to put a reality TV show on the air so fans can get to know the players better.

Fans will become attached to teams when they understand the players better, and in my opinion, hockey has some of the coolest, funnest guys in sports who would know how to put on an awesome reality show.

The NHL needs something to capture more fans, and a reality TV show is a fun idea that I think would work well.
