St. Louis Rams: 5 Reasons the Rams Job Should Attract a Quality Coach
The St. Louis Rams are looking for a head coach, and they should have no time finding a good one. Of all the job openings in the NFL right now, the Rams is the most attractive.
Remember, the Rams were 7-9 a year ago, and picked by many to win the NFC West in 2011. The San Francisco 49ers had a great season, and might seem like they are in a league of their own, but the NFC West has had a different champion in each of the last four seasons.
If the Rams could land a good coach, it's not unreasonable to assume they might climb back in the NFC playoff picture as early as next season.
Here are five reasons the situation surrounding the Rams' head coaching job should land Rams' fans a quality coach.
1. The Rams Have a Franchise Quarterback
Sam Bradford had a rough year, but he was put in a horrible situation. He lost his best receiver in the first game of the season, as well as other receivers due to injury. Bradford got less production out of his tight ends than any quarterback in the NFL. Also, Bradford played behind a terrible offensive line.
Bradford has to improve, but he has the goods to be an elite quarterback. That alone is going to get a lot of coaches' attention.
2. The Rams Have the No. 2 Pick in the 2012 Draft
Andrew Luck is probably going to be the No. 1 pick, and there are going to be about three or four teams that need a quarterback. Somebody will fall in love with Robert Griffin III. That means there is going to be a very nice package of draft picks coming the Rams' way.
They could use those extra picks to rebuild, or they could simply draft Matt Kalil, the left tackle from USC, and begin rebuilding their line. Either way, the Rams are in good shape with such a high pick.
3. The Rams Have Some Talented Players on Defense
Chris Long, Robert Quinn and James Lauranaitis are all Pro Bowl caliber players in the Rams' front seven. Second-year safety Darian Stewart looks like a keeper also. Jerome Murphy and Bradley Fletcher are both talented young corners, who should be healthy and ready to contribute next season.
The Rams need to add depth and talent at defensive tackle and to the linebacking corps, but they are one or two draft classes away from being an elite defense.
4. The Rams Have a Ton of Cap Space for the next two Seasons
With so much money coming off the books, the Rams should be able to add some free agents to come in and make an impact. Add those free agents to the surplus of draft picks the Rams might get if they trade the No. 2 pick, and it's easy to see how the Rams could reload in a hurry.
5. The Rams Have an Owner who Wants to Win, But Stays Out of the Way
Rams' owner Stan Kroenke is an avid sports fan who wants to win. He isn't afraid to spend the money for a winner, but he expects results. However, Kroenke isn't a Jerry Jones type of owner who wants to be seen or heard from. The man they call "Silent Stan" is happy to write the checks and then let the coaches and general managers do their job.
With so many positives surrounding the Rams' job, they are going to attract a quality coach. Multiple media outlets are reporting the Rams will interview former Titans' coach Jeff Fisher this week, and that the Rams' are the favorites to land Fisher.
With Fisher calling the shots, and a competent general manager in charge of personnel, the Rams could quickly return to the top of the NFC West.
