3 Takeaways from Jets' Week 11 Loss vs. Bills

Joe TanseyNov 20, 2023

The New York Jets remained at their offensive rock bottom in their 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Zach Wilson struggled enough that head coach Robert Saleh made the decision to bench him for Tim Boyle.

Some would argue that move came a few weeks late from the Jets head coach as the team tries to stay afloat in the AFC playoff conversation.

The Jets defense did not help ease the misery on Sunday, as it let up over 130 yards on the ground and allowed Josh Allen to throw for 275 yards.

The Jets are now 4-6 and enter Friday's game against the Miami Dolphins in a must-win spot to hold on to anything positive about their season.

Zach Wilson's Benching Was Warranted

Wilson hit a new season low with his 81-yard passing performance.

The 2021 first-round draft pick completed just seven of his 15 passes and gave the Jets zero confidence they could move the ball on a consistent basis on Sunday.

Saleh finally benched Wilson in the second half, a move that did not matter much for the final result, but could impact the next few weeks of the season.

Tim Boyle only completed seven of his 14 throws and he managed to throw for just 33 yards in garbage time.

Saleh told reporters after the game that he is undecided on who will start versus the Dolphins on Friday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

At this point, it may not matter who is under center because the Jets offense as a whole is stuck in a rut with no clear-cut answer how to fix it.

Garrett Wilson Failed to Make Any Impact

Garrett Wilson's consistency was one of the few things the Jets could rely on this season despite the quarterback struggles.

Wilson's run of four straight 80-yard performance came to a screeching half in upstate New York, as he was held to two catches for nine yards on eight targets.

Buffalo's game plan to put two men on Wilson's side of the field worked to perfection and it caused all sorts of issues for the Jets offense.

The Jets have at least moved the ball into scoring position through Wilson and Breece Hall this season, but that production was nonexistent on Sunday.

Wilson needs a bounce-back performance on Friday to help whomever starts at quarterback.

However, there will be concerns about Wilson's output since he has not had more than 50 receiving yards in three AFC East games this season.

Defense Stood No Chance Against Bills

The Jets allowed their first 300-yard concession since Week 6.

Josh Allen finished with 275 passing yards despite Stefon Diggs only catching four passes for 27 yards.

Allen received support from the James Cook-led rushing attack to post 23 of the Bills' 32 points in the second and third quarters.

Buffalo's output brought up concerns about New York's performance against playoff-level teams.

The Jets held their last three opponents under 275 total yards, but the New York Giants, Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders are all out of playoff positions.

Five of New York's six highest yardage concessions in 2023 came against three teams in playoff spots and the Bills.

That is a concerning trend ahead of Friday's matchup with the Dolphins and the Week 14 contest versus the Houston Texans.
