NFL Draft 2012: Robert Griffin III and Players Whose Stock Rose In Bowl Games

Brian MaziqueJan 4, 2012

Robert Griffin III was already a highly touted prospect, but his work in the Valero Alamo Bowl only boosted his stock in eyes of NFL scouts. He continued to show great decision-making skills, athleticism and accuracy. Even though the Bears rode the running game to victory over the Washington Huskies, RG3's 24-of-33 performance for 295 yards, one TD and no picks may make him a top five pick, instead of a top 10 selection.

Here are a couple others who helped themselves with their play in bowl games:

Danny Coale, Virginia Tech, WR

While Coale was probably looking like an undrafted free agent before the Sugar Bowl, his performance against Michigan (eight receptions, 117 yards) may allow him to creep into the bottom half of the draft.

Coale showed great hands and the ability to get some separation from good athletes in the Michigan secondary. This play was called back in overtime. It looked like a catch to me, but it was overturned after being called a TD on the field.

Whitney Mercilus, Illinois, DE

Mercilus has the best name for a defensive lineman I've ever heard. He tied the Fighting Illini's career sacks record in the Fight Hunger Bowl against UCLA with 1.5 sacks. He also had five solo tackles. More than the stats, he wreaked havoc in the defensive backfield with his presence. It is exactly what NFL scouts want from a defensive end.

A good Combine could draw him even with Quinton Coples as the top defensive end available.
