Michigan State vs. Wisconsin: Watch Badgers Insane Buzzer Beater Waved off

Mike ChiariJan 4, 2012

With just 10 seconds remaining in overtime, the Michigan State Spartans missed a free throw with a three-point lead, giving the Wisconsin Badgers a chance to tie it. After a miss by Jordan Taylor, Ryan Evans grabbed the ball, ran behind the arc, and seemingly hit the game-tying bank shot.

After further review, however, it was ruled that the ball had yet to leave Evans' hand by the time the game clock had run out. Therefore, the basket was waved off and the Spartans escaped Madison with a huge victory.

At first glance, it seemed as though Evans' shot was good, but that is because there was a discrepancy between the backboard clock and the scoreboard clock. On the backboard clock, the ball was still in Evans' hand when it reached zero, but the scoreboard clock had a tenth of a second remaining.

The officials go by the backboard clock, though, and because of that, an amazing shot was disallowed. It had to be a tough pill for the No. 19 Badgers to swallow, especially coming off a shocking loss to Iowa. Conversely, the win should help catapult No. 11 Michigan State to new heights.

Clearly, the NCAA needs to look into the play because there should never be an instance where the clocks are inconsistent. Had the officials gone by the scoreboard clock, the shot would have counted and the teams would have played another overtime session.

Ultimately, the referees can't be blamed in this instance. They were simply doing their jobs and made the correct call based on what the replay showed. That doesn't make things any less disheartening for Evans and the rest of the Badgers, though, especially after their raucous celebration following the shot.

Even though the shot didn't officially count and the game will go down in the books as a three-point win for Michigan State, you can't take anything away from Evans as he came up with a huge play in crunch time, albeit a fraction of a second too late.

These are, unfortunately, the types of things that happen when nothing is going right, and that has been the case for Wisconsin over its past two contests. The Badgers are too talented to stay down for long, though, so I would expect a quick rebound.
