2015 AL MVP Josh Donaldson Retires After 13 MLB Seasons with Yankees, Blue Jays, More

Veteran third baseman Josh Donaldson retired on Monday after 13 MLB seasons:

Donaldson most recently was a member of the Milwaukee Brewers, going 2-for-7 in the team's National League Wild Card Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He spent most of the past two seasons with the New York Yankees before he was released in August.

Donaldson told The Score's Josh Wegman in November that he was "up for playing one more year."

However, he won't get that chance.

A former American League MVP, Donaldson saw a sharp decline in his performance over the past few years. The last time he had a batting average over .250 or hit at least 30 home runs was in 2019. He finished with more strikeouts than hits in each of the last six seasons.

Prior to being released by the Yankees, Donaldson was hitting .142 over 106 at-bats in 34 games. Of his 15 hits, 10 of them were home runs. He missed chunks of the year due to injuries to his hamstring and calf.

In addition to New York and Milwaukee, Donaldson also played for the Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland, Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins.

Donaldson's best year came in his first year in Toronto in 2015 when he hit .297 with 41 home runs and 123 RBI to earn MVP honors. He was selected to the All-Star Game in three straight years from 2014 to 2016, and he won two Silver Slugger Awards.

Now, the 38-year-old will have the chance to kick his feet up and enjoy retirement.
