Why Bill Belichick and Patriots' Lack of Class Is Actually Killer Instinct

Marlon MaloneyJan 5, 2012

Seems like every year, people spew their dislike for New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick

Not out of sheer jealousy because the Pats are always finding ways to win, but that he keeps his starters going full bore for all 60 minutes of every game.

Any time the Patriots blow a team out, the surefire Hall of Fame head coach is accused of running up scores and being "classless."

The most recent instance of this so-called classless play took place last weekend against the Buffalo Bills.

Already ahead 35-21, the Pats racked on two more touchdowns with less than four minutes remaining in the game.

I offer up a different perspective. In today's NFL, more than ever before, no lead is safe until the final second ticks off the clock.

I can understand how people might be upset that their team continues to run roughshod over their team, but ultimately this is a business.

These men are being paid to compete to the best of their abilities in every game. In 2009, the 15-0 Indianapolis Colts were shellacked for resting starters in the team's final game.

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

If these guys can't handle being outclassed, then perhaps they don't have the competitive drive to play the sport.

You're being paid to play a sport; stop the other team from scoring. If you can't, too bad.

Since when is it classless to allow your team's players to earn all the statistical boosts they deserve? To sit a player is to in effect alter their career stats, for the sake of what?

Feelings?

This isn't peewee, middle or even high school football. This is professional football. We don't expect sympathy in any other form of competition (business, gambling, etc.)

I could see it now, Usain Bolt is set to break the world record in the 200 meters, but slows down because he's too far ahead.

Let's just stop with the jealousy and "ethics" and see this for what it is. Bill Belichick is the only coach to create a dynasty in the salary cap era.

Obviously, he's doing something right.
