Green Bay Packers Looking to Tag and Trade Matt Flynn: Which Teams Should Bite?

John RozumJun 7, 2018

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel, the Green Bay Packers want to franchise backup QB Matt Flynn, then trade him:

"

Matt Flynn will be a member of the Green Bay Packers for the next two months. After that, the backup quarterback will be either on his way to another team via trade or through free agency. Either way he'll be a rich man.

"

It's obvious that Flynn's record-setting performance at Lambeau Field in Week 17 in a win over the Detroit Lions is what began this whole ordeal.

And with teams in the market needing a QB, here are some who should bite on Flynn.

Seattle Seahawks

Pick your poison, Seattle—Tarvaris Jackson or Charlie Whitehurst?

Or, you could go a third direction and strike a deal with the Packers for Matt Flynn. Now, Seattle's receiving corps is not on the level of Green Bay's, however, they're not all that bad either.

Rookie Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate and Ben Obomanu are collectively solid options, and with Pete Carroll as his head coach, Matt Flynn will hit the ground running in the Great Northwest.

Also, the Seahawks are a run-oriented team with Marshawn Lynch in the backfield. Lynch's threat on the ground will take a lot of pressure off of Flynn to perform in a new system, and will allow him even more time to develop as a weekly starter.

Not to mention Lynch is better than any of Green Bay's RBs, so the Seahawks offense will become significantly more balanced in 2012.

Much like he did with the Packers, Flynn will spread the ball around when needed. And more importantly, he has a reliable TE in Zach Miller who's vastly underrated.

In turn, that's four receiving targets and a stud back to carry the offense, with an offensive genius as a coach.

Cleveland Browns

The problem with the Cleveland Browns isn't so much the lack of production from Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace, as it is their health.

Both have dealt with injuries on more than one occasion in the past two seasons, negating any shot Cleveland had at developing rhythm in their offense. Plus, with other injuries plaguing the offense on the line and in the backfield in 2011, the season was doomed before it began.

Well, making a move for Flynn will only make both Wallace and McCoy better. It's a challenge for all three players to showcase their skills, and if Cleveland drafts a WR like they should, the offense will see improvements.

Not to mention they'll be a lot healthier on the line and in the backfield, so making a move for Flynn is a must. With a QB controversy in play for 2011, there's no need to draft a QB with a guy like Flynn on the market.

Bring him in and he'll be the favorite to start, and the Browns could also send either McCoy or Wallace to Green Bay as part of their deal. Therefore, the Packers still have a somewhat reliable backup QB and Cleveland gets their starter.

Factor in their improved health and a stud receiver such as Justin Blackmon or Michael Floyd from the NFL Draft, and Cleveland will be set to go in 2012.

Jacksonville Jaguars

3 of 4

The Jacksonville Jaguars would be a great situation for Matt Flynn.

They have arguably the NFL's best RB in Maurice Jones-Drew, a solid defense, will be starting over with a new head coach and have a Top 10 draft pick.

Additionally, Flynn is more experienced than Blaine Gabbert, and worst-case scenario is that Gabbert learns from Flynn as a backup.

And with MJD still being the focal point of the offense, Flynn's ability to spread the ball around will make life easier on the Jags' ground game. At the same time, Flynn makes Jacksonville's receiving corps better.

Then in the draft, Jacksonville must land either Justin Blackmon, Michael Floyd or Alshon Jeffery. Any of those three will significantly boost their passing offense, and provide the ability to stretch the field and the fade-route threat inside the red zone.

With a stout defense, solid rushing offense and vastly improved passing game, Matt Flynn can really propel his NFL career to another level in Jacksonville.

Denver Broncos

Tim Tebow may be the man right now in Denver, however with three straight losses to close out the 2011 regular season and a tough matchup against Pittsburgh in the AFC Wild Card, finishing 0-4 is realistic for the Broncos.

Include Tebow's below-50 percent completion percentage and the Broncos' No. 31-ranked passing offense (averaging 152.1 per game), and there's clearly some work to be done.

Now, we know that Tebow will put in the work this offseason to significantly improve under center and in the passing game. The question is whether it'll still be good enough to warrant a shot at the AFC West and/or Wild Card in 2012.

If not, there are going to be some tough changes made in Denver, and if Tebow fails to produce like he has each of the last three weeks, can the Broncos really rely on Brady Quinn to get the job done? No.

So, making a move for Matt Flynn is not the worst of ideas.

The thing is, it provides Tebow with some competition through the offseason and training camp. Obviously it's not the most ideal situation for Flynn, however if Tebow doesn't work out, Flynn has proven he can dominate playoff defenses.

Denver could use all the help they can get in the passing game, and how much Tebow improves will dictate their success.

But that is the concern, since Tim has yet to really get comfortably in the pocket, while making reads and feeling the rush all at once.
