Oklahoma State Football: Narrow Fiesta Bowl Victory Proves BCS Got It Right

Brett StephenJun 5, 2018

Oklahoma State narrowly escaped a loss to Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl as Cardinal kicker Jordan Williamson missed an overtime field goal.

The narrow victory only proves that the BCS got it right again this year as it put LSU and Alabama in the national title game in a rematch of a November thriller (or snorefest if you’re not a fan of defense) in which LSU won, 9-6, in overtime.

Comparing common opponents isn’t an exact science so saying that a team A beat team B by 14 points and team C beat team B by only 13 points and therefore team A would beat team C would be ignorant.

However, if team A beats team B by 23 points and team C beats team A by 13 points and team D beats team B in overtime by a field goal, it is logical to say that team D has little to no chance of beating with team C.

Confused yet?

Stanford was dominated by Oregon who was dominated by LSU and Oklahoma State barely beat Stanford, so logically speaking LSU would beat Oklahoma State handily if they were to meet.

Again, not an exact science and anything can happen on any given day in the game of football, but in this case, the BCS got it right.

As a Tiger fan, I would have loved to see Oklahoma State in the BCS title game because I think it would have been an easier game for LSU.

But if the goal is to get the two best teams in the national championship game, then Alabama needs to be LSU’s opponent.

Alabama is the only team in the nation that could beat LSU and that was nearly proven in November when the Crimson Tide outplayed the Tigers but couldn’t convert field goals and lost by three points.

Oklahoma State had a tremendous season and had it not been for a tragedy in the Cowboy family, may have gone undefeated and played in the BCS title game.

As much as many would have liked to have seen that, it would have kept the rematch of LSU and Alabama from happening and truly left the question of who is truly the best team in the nation in 2011 unanswered.

Congratulations to the Cowboys on a spectacular season and a Fiesta Bowl win, but the BCS got this one right.
