Ricky Rubio Video: Watch Young Timberwolves Duo Hook Up for Amazing Alley-Oop

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

At 2-3, the Minnesota Timberwolves haven't exactly flown out of the gates, but considering it was questionable whether they would win two games in an entire month over the past couple seasons, this is a pretty promising start for them.

One of the biggest reasons for that is the rookie duo of point guard Ricky Rubio and forward Derrick Williams. Rubio was the team's first-round pick two seasons ago, but he hadn't made the transition from the Spanish league until this year. Williams is a versatile big man who the T'Wolves took with the No. 2 overall pick this past draft.

In Monday's game against the San Antonio Spurs, the pair of rising stars hooked up for the first of what figures to be many exciting plays. From beyond the three-point arc, Rubio lofted an overhead pass toward the basket where Williams grabbed the ball and threw down a one-handed reverse dunk.

As impressive as that play was, a 106-96 win against an extremely experienced Spurs team was even better. That means that Minnesota holds wins over two Western Conference powers in the Spurs and the defending NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks this season.

Additionally, the Wolves have lost games to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat by a grand total of nine points. What that tells me is that the talent is certainly there, but the team simply has to mature and learn how to win.

There aren't many veterans on the team, but Rubio, Williams, Kevin Love, Michael Beasley, Wesley Johnson and Anthony Randolph form a young core that may be unmatched by any other team. In other words, it looks like all those years of top-five picks are finally paying off.

Minnesota may not be a contender in the Western Conference this season and it may not even make the playoffs, but with players like Rubio and Williams in the fold, the future is very bright for this once-downtrodden franchise.
