Chelsea Transfer Rumours: Why Selling Fernando Torres Won't Solve Anything

Dan RenfroJan 2, 2012

A Fernando Torres transfer will not solve Chelsea's problems this year.

Look, Torres is not worth the £50 million Chelsea paid for him last January.

That's a fact.

Still, Andre Villas-Boas has no incentive in selling the Spaniard.

Torres is not the one conceding goals, he is not making questionable tactical decisions and he is not playing too poorly.

Chelsea's biggest problem this year has been their inconsistent defense. They have conceded 25 goals in 20 matches.

However, they only have four clean sheets. When you are conceding goals on such an inconsistent basis, bad things are waiting to happen.

The Blues have had a tough time earning three points on a regular basis, which explains their spot in a distant fourth place. If they don't start playing defense more consistently, they won't win points consistently.

Torres can't control that.

Villas-Boas' tactics have been picked apart hundreds of times. I won't continue to question his decisions. He makes his picks, and they haven't necessarily worked out.

That should speak for itself.

Torres can't control what his manager asks the players to do, so he can't be blamed for the team being put in a sub-optimal decision.

Finally, why transfer Torres when he might be the best option?

Torres has played pretty well this year, and he has been dangerous and incisive with his passes all season. He hasn't put the ball in the net, but no other strikers have been able to for the Blues this year.

Didier Drogba has been inconsistent, and Daniel Sturridge is playing on the outside this year, so the Blues are desperate for a striker they can rely on.

Torres could be that man.

He has played relatively well. Once he starts scoring goals, he won't stop. He is a world-class striker, and he simply needs to return to that form.

Torres isn't a part of the shaky defense. He doesn't make tactical decisions. And he isn't playing too poorly.

As a result, Chelsea should hang onto him.

The Blues have problems, but selling Torres won't solve any of them.
