Debating AJ Styles' Future Ahead of World Heavyweight Title Match vs. Seth Rollins

Philip LindseyMay 26, 2023

This weekend, AJ Styles will take on Seth Rollins at WWE Night of Champions at the Jeddah Super Dome in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

This a momentous occasion because it marks the two men's return to the main event scene as they compete for the new world heavyweight championship. Both superstars haven't fought for such a prestigious prize since they were decimated by Brock Lesnar last year at Elimination Chamber, which took place at the same venue.

So, it's a bit symbolic that their respective journeys would lead them to a one-on-one match in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. For Rollins, this is his chance to silence the lingering doubt created by his failed run as the universal champion.

It's the culmination of three years of hard work and dedication to reinventing himself as one of the most popular wrestlers in the industry. As such, this long-awaited world title win feels like a foregone conclusion.

What about his opponent? The 45-year-old world has already cemented his legacy as one of the greatest in-ring performers of all time, securing gold with just about every major company you could think of.

In 2016, The Phenomenal One finally reached the biggest stage in professional wrestling when he joined WWE. His year-long title reign in 2018 etched his name among 15 of the most illustrious champions in the history of the company.

Although he hasn't held the WWE title in 4 years, Styles has arguably accomplished everything there is to do. So, what's next for the legendary high flyer?

Finishing Strong With Special Attraction Matches

On June 6, Styles will turn 46 and potentially reach the middle of his current WWE contract. The Gainesville, Georgia native initially said his three-year extension in 2019 would be his final one. However, he reportedly signed another lucrative deal last year, which would end in 2024.

The move to a lighter schedule seemingly extended his time with the company. Nevertheless, Styles also recently told Alex McCarthy of Inside the Ropes that he already has an opponent for his retirement match in mind.

This suggests his swan song could be coming up sooner than some fans expected. It would be awesome to see him win a world title one more time before he hangs up his boots, but he doesn't have anything else left to prove.

It would make more sense to put him in as many dream matchups as possible while he's still around. The Phenomenal One has already stood toe-to-toe with a who's who list of WrestleMania opponents.

Still, Cody Rhodes is a name that immediately springs to mind because the two have surprisingly never faced off against one another. The American Nightmare left WWE right around the time Styles joined the company.

An encounter with Gunther would also be tremendous. The two have worked some house show matches together, but they have yet to square off on television or a premium live event. It's not quite time for his farewell tour yet, but there are still so many new faces for him to wrestle with along the way. WWE should give him as many high-profile matches as possible now.

The Right Place At The Right Time

Styles has consistently talked about how much he enjoys working with his real-life friends, The Good Brothers. The OC returned to television at such a great time because there are so many stables they can feud with.

The trio would be an interesting foil for The Bloodline or LWO. There's so much star power among those groups that it doesn't need to be a title match. WWE could get some entertaining stories or tv matches out of these matchups.

It's also an ideal time for the two-time WWE champion to work with younger talent like Grayson Waller. The 45-year-old has a wealth of knowledge and experience. He still has so much to give to the business. The newer generation would benefit from entering the ring with him.

It's hard to tell if this truly is Styles' last WWE contract, and we're heading into the home stretch. He's the only man who knows for certain, but this would be the best use of his remaining years. Maybe he has one last title run left in him, but there's still time to create more moments with him even if he doesn't win the world heavyweight championship on Saturday.
