2012 NFL Mock Draft: Who Are the Biggest Winners, Losers in NFL Draft Order?
The following teams are the biggest winners and losers of the 2012 NFL draft order, which now has the first 20 picks set after the conclusion of the regular season:
WINNERS
Indianapolis Colts
The Colts got the best of both worlds: They finished the season with two wins, which eliminated them from the record books as one of the NFL's worst ever teams. But they also finished with the No. 1 overall pick—a win in its own for the right to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.
St. Louis Rams
The Rams are sitting pretty at No. 2 overall. They'll likely field numerous offers from teams who want to take Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III before another quarterback-needy franchise gets their hands on him. By the time someone picks at No. 2, the Rams could be looking at a ransom of picks at their disposal.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers are a franchise trending up, and they'll get another great opportunity at No. 8 to build on a young talent base. The possibility that a No. 1 receiver (Alshon Jeffrey, Justin Blackmon) could be available exists at that selection. The Panthers need defense, but why not continue to build around one of the NFL's most dynamic players?
LOSERS
Cleveland Browns
There's no doubt that the Browns can find an impact player at No. 4, but the fear of another team jumping over them and taking Griffin III is real. In the end, the Heisman winner is the ultimate prize for Cleveland. The Browns won't want to move up from No. 4 to get him, but they are in a precarious spot.
Seattle Seahawks
Pete Carroll has said recently that Tarvaris Jackson is his starting quarterback. I don't know if that will fly if the Seahawks want to get back into the playoffs. The fastest way back is getting a hold of a real franchise quarterback, and they are drafting too late to get one.
San Diego Chargers
For all the talk about how "talented" the Chargers are, they certainly have a lot of holes that need to be filled. But instead of picking in the top 12, the Chargers will be in the late teens. There's absolutely no faulting a team for winning every game they can, but the Chargers now have to fix their roster from further down in the draft.
