NFL Draft 2012: Which Teams Are Screwed by Current Order?

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

"You play to win the game."

Former coach Herm Edwards was absolutely correct during his memorably postgame press conference, but it doesn't always pay to win.

No NFL players or teams will truly tank—that was proved again this year—but we can not help but talk about what seemingly meaningless wins can hamper a team's draft plans.

Here are few teams screwed by the current draft order.

Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 7)

If the Jags wanted any shot at one of the top quarterbacks, they've fallen too far.

The Colts are either going to draft Andrew Luck or trade the pick outright. Unless the Jags want to move up themselves—and it would be shocking if the Colts even considered talking to them seeing as they're AFC South rivals—they'll be forced to chase for Robert Griffin III.

RG3 has plenty of suitors as well though, and one in particular—the Washington Redskins—pick directly in front of the Jags at No. 6.

The Redskins' weaker schedule gives them the edge and they have a major need at QB.

If the Jags don't get a shot at quarterback, their next option will be a wide receiver. Unfortunately for them, St. Louis, Cleveland and Tampa Bay are all in that market as well.

Not only will the Jags miss out on any shot at a QB at No. 7, but they'll likely be forced to reach if they want a receiver too.

Miami Dolphins (No. 8 or No. 9)

The Fins are almost in the same boat as the Jaguars except their need at quarterback is even greater than Jacksonville's.

With the scenario in play and no legitimate No. 3 quarterback on the board with top-10 talent right now, Miami will be forced to consider trading up to land their future signal caller if they want to attack the position that way.

Their other biggest needs will also cause them to reach at this stage in the draft. Only Justin Blackmon projects as a potential top-10 receiver with legitimate value—Alshon Jeffery and Michael Floyd would both be reaches.

They would next be looking for a right tackle and adding one with a top-10 pick is never a great use of value. That said, either Jonathan Martin or Riley Reiff should be available and carry top-15 grades.

Seattle Seahawks (No. 11 or No. 12)

Another team that is likely going to be left out in the cold of the quarterback race, Seattle doesn't have as many needs as others.

Coach Pete Carroll has done a good job adding young, athletic talent during his team in the Great Northwest and he could legitimately be competing in the NFC West if he had a quarterback he could rely on.

The Seahawks won't be truly screwed at No. 11 or No. 12 because Carroll will find a talented player, but they will be screwed out of any chance at one of the top-two quarterbacks.
