NFL Draft 2023: Updated Selection Order and Top Prospects Post-Super Bowl

Zach BuckleyFeb 13, 2023

What can the NFL draft do for you?

How about deliver a world title?

OK, it's not actually that simple, but just ask the Kansas City Chiefs, crowned Super Bowl champions Sunday night, about the importance of the annual talent grab. Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes was drafted by this franchise. So, too, were Kansas City's leading receiver (Travis Kelce), leading rusher (Isiah Pacheco) and leading tackler (Nick Bolton) in that contest.

It might take more than one terrific draft to put an organization on a championship path, but adding the right batch of players can be a serious step toward turning things around.

With the 2023 draft order now officially set, let's lay out the selection order for the first 31 picks (the Miami Dolphins had to forfeit their first-round pick) and break down two of the top quarterback prospects in this class.

C.J. Stroud, Ohio State

If Stroud isn't the first player taken this April, he won't wait long to hear his name called.

His two seasons as Ohio State's starter yielded stat lines that popped with both electricity and precision. He completed 69.3 percent of his 830 career attempts for 8,123 yards with 85 touchdowns against only 12 interceptions.

He has the courage to take chances and the talent to capitalize on them. He uses his eyes to manipulate defenders and combines the accuracy to throw through tight windows with the strength to rocket passes downfield. He isn't much of a rushing threat, but he is a good athlete who can elude pressure and give his targets time to get open.

If he cleans up his mechanics and leans on that athleticism to improve as a rusher, he offers nothing short of superstar potential.

Bryce Young, Alabama

Young was a Heisman Trophy winner in 2021 and finished sixth in the award voting this past season. Good luck finding a better resume among this crop of quarterback prospects.

Between 2021 and 2022, he was 611-of-927 (65.9 percent) for 8,200 yards and 79 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. He added another seven scores on the ground.

His list of strengths is enormous: quick release, accuracy, reading the field, ball placement, decision-making, anticipation, touch, agility, athleticism. His list of weaknesses is some nitpicky gripes (can leave the pocket prematurely and takes a few risks) and a lack of size (6'0", 194 lbs).

Making a long story short, he was a great quarterback in college and has a chance to be the same at the next level.
