NBA Trade Rumors: Examining Top Gossip on 2023 Deadline Day

Zach BuckleyFeb 9, 2023

The 2023 NBA trade deadline has arrived.

Or, the final buzzer will sound at 3 p.m. ET, at least.

Trade season is always unpredictable, but this might be an extreme. Kevin Durant is headed to the Phoenix Suns. D'Angelo Russell is going back to the Los Angeles Lakers. Kyrie Irving just played his first game for the Dallas Mavericks.

What could possibly be on deck now? Expecting the unexpected is probably the right way to go.

The Raptors remain the team to watch leading up to this afternoon's deadline.

Despite adding Jakob Poeltl—who scratches a serious itch for paint protection—Toronto could still do some deadline selling. Or at least some reshuffling.

The Raptors continue discussing O.G. Anunoby deals, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. As the ESPN scribe noted, the Durant deal could be good news for Toronto, since Western Conference contenders now need a big-wing defender to throw at him.

Considering there has already been talk of potentially having three first-round picks going back to the Raptors, Anunoby could be the next big fish to find a new pond.

Nets to Shop Jae Crowder

Jae Crowder waited all season for a trade.

He might be involved in two in fewer than 24 hours.

Crowder was part of Brooklyn's return package in the Durant megadeal, but the Nets won't necessarily keep him around. They are "expected to explore trade scenarios" for Crowder before the deadline, per Wojnarowski.

While Crowder took forever to find his ticket out of Phoenix, things should be much simpler in Brooklyn. The Suns essentially needed to send out a win-now forward and bring back a win-now forward. The Nets won't have the same obstacle. It's unclear how hard Brooklyn will push through the stretch run, but even if the Nets want to be competitive, they have plenty of two-way wings beyond Crowder.

John Wall on the Way out in LA

John Wall's tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers could be coming to an end.

He's been sidelined since mid-January with an abdominal injury, but his grasp on a rotation role never seemed particularly firm. His surface numbers might seem fine (11.4 points and 5.2 assists in 22.2 minutes), but any deeper dive raises major red flags. His 40.8/30.3/68.1 shooting slash underwhelms at every level, and his minus-9.1 net differential is the worst on the team, per NBA.com.

The Clippers have apparently seen enough. They're reportedly ready to cut ties whether that happens with a deal by the deadline or a buyout after, per Marc Stein.

Teams probably weren't scrambling to trade for Wall anyway—he's a 32-year-old with a shaky jumper and a scary injury history—but this report won't help. If there are interested teams, they can keep their assets, wait for the deadline to pass and try their luck on the buyout market.
