Aaron Rodgers Rumors: 'Year-to-Year Approach' Complicates Packers' Trade Interest

Mike ChiariFeb 3, 2023

The trade value of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has reportedly been difficult to gauge because of uncertainty about his playing future.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, multiple NFL executives have said teams are reluctant to part with too much draft capital since Rodgers' "year-to-year approach" to playing means he could retire after the 2023 season.

An anonymous NFC exec offered a potential solution of teams trading conditional future draft picks for Rodgers based on how much longer he plays. Hypothetically, if he retires after only one season, the pick would be a second-rounder, but it would become a first-rounder if he plays at least two more seasons.

Prior to the 2022 season, Rodgers took some time to mull retirement before deciding to return for an 18th NFL season.

After he won the NFL MVP in both 2020 and 2021, the 2022 campaign didn't go according to plan for Rodgers or the Packers.

Green Bay went 8-9 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018. Also, Rodgers struggled through one of his worst statistical seasons in recent memory.

His 3,695 passing yards were his fewest ever in a full season as a starter, and his 12 interceptions were his most since 2008. He also threw just 26 touchdown passes compared to 48 in 2020 and 37 in 2021.

Still, there are likely several teams that would love to have the 39-year-old Rodgers, as he isn't at all far removed from being the best quarterback in the game.

Among the teams speculated to be in the mix for Rodgers are the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets, as both have significant links to the veteran signal-caller.

The Raiders acquired superstar wide receiver Davante Adams from the Packers last offseason, and a reunion between Rodgers and Adams could be huge for the careers of both players, as they were first-team All-Pros together in 2020 and 2021.

Meanwhile, the Jets recently hired Nathaniel Hackett as their offensive coordinator. Hackett was the Packers' OC during Rodgers' MVP seasons in 2020 and 2021.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to trade Rodgers will have something to do with the compensation, but it will likely be primarily tied to how much belief the Packers have in Jordan Love.

If Love does not start in 2023, it is difficult to imagine him doing anything other than signing with a different team in free agency prior to the 2024 season.

Love was the No. 26 pick in the 2020 draft out of Utah State, and in three NFL seasons, he has made just one start and attempted 83 passes.

He has shown flashes in limited opportunities, but the only way to know for sure if he is a capable starter is by giving him the chance.

The Packers had a similar decision once before, as Rodgers sat behind Brett Favre for his first three NFL seasons. Green Bay went with Rodgers over Favre in 2008, and the move paid huge dividends, which could influence the decision this time around.
