NFL Draft 2023: Updated Selection Order After AFC, NFC Championships

Erin WalshJan 30, 2023

The race for a Super Bowl title is finally down to just two teams following Sunday's AFC and NFC Championship Games.

While the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are moving on to the Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, on Feb. 12, the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers must shift their focuses to the 2023 NFL draft.

With the championship games now complete, 29 of the draft's first-round selections are locked in. The Bengals will select 28th and the 49ers received the 29th overall selection, though they traded the pick. The final two selections will be determined following the Super Bowl.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs Down Joe Burrow, Bengals in AFC Championship Game

Cincinnati's hopes of reaching the Super Bowl for the second consecutive season were crushed on Sunday with a 23-20 loss to Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium.

Sunday's game came down to the wire, but a gutsy performance from Patrick Mahomes on Kansas City's final drive helped put the Chiefs in field-goal range for the game-winning kick by Harrison Butker.

The Bengals now have to come to terms with reality and the fact that they once again came so close to winning a title and are left with nothing to show for it. It will be back to the drawing board for Cincinnati, which will look to address some of its biggest needs through the draft.

The Bengals will select 28th overall this spring, and while that pick won't get them one of the very best players in the draft, they'll still be adding a premier player to their roster ahead of the 2023 campaign.

Jalen Hurts, Eagles Dominate 49ers for First Super Bowl Berth Since 2018

San Francisco's dreams of reaching the Super Bowl with rookie quarterback Brock Purdy came to an end with a 31-7 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Jalen Hurts and the Eagles were dominant against the 49ers, which had to turn to fourth-string quarterback Josh Johnson after Purdy suffered an apparent UCL injury in the first quarter.

San Francisco didn't stand much of a chance with Johnson under center, and Philadelphia took full advantage of the opportunity.

The 49ers have received the 29th overall pick in the 2023 draft. However, that pick becomes Denver's by way of a trade with the Miami Dolphins, who got it in 2021 when San Francisco moved up for Trey Lance.

So the Niners will not have a first-round draft pick this year, meaning they'll need to address their biggest needs in the later rounds or through free agency.
