UFC 141 Results: Will Alistair Overeem Be Another Heavyweight Flash in the Pan?

Tim McTiernanJan 1, 2012

It has become a well-known fact that the heavyweight division has never had a dominant champion. Nobody has ever defended the title more than two times in a row.

There have been many fighters pegged as "the next big thing" in the heavyweight division, and one by one, they drop off.

There was Brock Lesnar, who was the next big thing, became the heavyweight champion and after losing two in a row, has retired.

Then during the same time as Lesnar, there was Shane Carwin, who was 12-0 with 12 first-round finishes. However, Carwin has now lost two in a row and is out for some time due to an injury.

The UFC heavyweight division simply has never had a truly dominant fighter.

Could Alistair Overeem become that dominant fighter, or will he just be another flash in the pan?

Next up for Overeem, he has a title fight against Junior dos Santos. That fight will tell us everything we need to know.

JDS is considered one of the best strikers in the heavyweight division. Overeem is credentialed as the best striker in the heavyweight division.

The future of the heavyweight division rests in this fight.

If Overeem wins, then JDS becomes the latest flash in the heavyweight pan.

If JDS wins, then maybe Overeem was overrated all along.

Either way, someone is going to come out of this fight looking like the greatest heavyweight ever, and somebody is going to look like they were just overrated.
