3 Available NFL Free Agents Who Can Put Eagles Over the Top

Alex BallentineOct 19, 2022

The Philadelphia Eagles' quest for perfection took another step forward in Week 6 with a major win over the Dallas Cowboys, 26-17.

The win gives the Eagles a decided advantage in the NFC East and continues to establish them as a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

However, general manager Howie Roseman's job of optimizing the roster is never over.

The road to the Super Bowl is long and arduous. Depth can often be the key factor, as weaknesses have a way of eventually showing up at inopportune times.

With that in mind, Roseman would be wise to continue looking at ways to improve the roster. While the trade market is most popular right now, there are some free agents who remain unaffiliated and could make a difference.

Here are three names he should be looking to call.

T/G Daryl Williams

Weeks 5 and 6 offered the Eagles a glimpse at life without Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, respectively. It wasn't pretty.

In both cases, it was Jack Driscoll who entered the lineup. Against the Cardinals, he surrendered five of the team's 10 pressures allowed on the day. He didn't fare all that well against Micah Parsons and the Cowboys' front seven, either.

The offensive line is one of the Eagles' greatest strengths, but depth is always key there. An O-line is only as good as its weakest link.

If that link is Driscoll at tackle, it could come back to bite them. Instead, they could bring in Daryl Williams who can compete with the 2020 fourth-rounder as both a backup guard and tackle. He played both roles for the Buffalo Bills in the last few seasons.

In 2021, the 30-year-old earned a respectable 67.5 grade from PFF while playing 1,172 snaps, committing six penalties and giving up four sacks.

Williams' ability to play guard and tackle would only add to the Eagles' depth and minimize the risk of an injury derailing the unit.

S Jaquiski Tartt

Yes, we've been here before. The Eagles signed Jaquiski Tartt earlier this season but cut him in favor of K'Von Wallace and Reed Blankenship as the backups to Marcus Epps and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

In terms of the starters, it was a good move. However, the play (or lack thereof) of the backups should make bringing Tartt back a possibility.

Wallace has played just 13 snaps on defense this season, earning a lowly 38.9 grade from PFF in the small sample size. Blankenship hasn't even been on the field for the defense while only playing 13 special teams snaps.

Tartt, 30, might not have done enough initially to beat out the two for a roster spot, but he started 14 games last season for the San Francisco 49ers and only allowed 5.9 yards per target.

The Eagles are in a position where depth could determine just how far they go this season. Their 6-0 start has shown how good they can be with relatively good health, but injuries are inevitable. Gardner-Johnson missed a stretch of plays in Week 6 with a hand injury.

Philly could find some safety insurance by bringing back Tartt.

WR Dede Westbrook

DeSean Jackson would have fit nicely into this category, but he just agreed to a contract with the Baltimore Ravens, which could use his services as a wide receiver.

The Eagles aren't hurting in that department, but if they do have a weakness, it's a lack of explosiveness in special teams.

Fortunately, there's still a good punt returner on the market in Dede Westbrook.

Britain Covey is 18th among 20 qualifiers in punt return yards per return with just 6.6. He's also already fumbled twice, causing concern that his mistakes could cost the team a game.

The 25-year-old does not really add anything as a receiver and has exclusively been used as a returner.

If the Eagles are willing to use a roster spot on a pure returner, it would make sense for Dede Westbrook to be on their radar. He returned punts for the Vikings last season, averaging 8.3 yards per return and even threw in 10 receptions for good measure.

The 28-year-old is the kind of under-the-radar acquisition that could wind up making a big difference.
