Booking Roman Reigns' Title Matches Through WWE WrestleMania 39

Kevin BergeOct 16, 2022

Roman Reigns is the leader in WWE. As the undisputed WWE universal champion, he holds all the gold and stands firmly above the pack as the biggest name in the business.

With The Bloodline behind him, he has been unstoppable, with few names left to challenge him. This has led to long waits between title defenses.

It's not ideal for WWE that The Tribal Chief is mostly on SmackDown and also holds the top title for Raw, but there's no easy way to take even one title off him at this point.

Reigns is setting a record as universal champion that is unlikely to be broken, and he will likely walk into WrestleMania 39 with both titles and over 900 days as world champion.

How can WWE make this run special without losing the fans? It will be important to make sure each title defense by Reigns matters. From Kevin Owens and Karrion Kross to Logan Paul and even The Rock, he needs rivals who will push him in unique ways.

The following is a focused look at the Road to WrestleMania for The Head of the Table, booking the best and most likely path he can take to keep his story as big as possible.

Crown Jewel: vs. Logan Paul

1 of 6

This is the first step for Reigns. His match with Logan Paul is set already, and WWE is putting everything behind making this as big a match as possible for Crown Jewel on November 5.

While many stand out as more deserving of a title shot, few can match up to the spectacle of this encounter. Reigns has faced no true celebrities during his run, and this will bring fresh eyes to WWE.

Paul has a chance to prove himself at the highest level after two impressive performances to start his career. His match with The Miz at SummerSlam was a particular eyeopener.

The focus in the build should be on the YouTuber's inexperience. He is going into a match with The Head of the Table, who has dominated veterans of the business for the past decade but has never faced someone so fresh.

It makes Paul an anomaly that Reigns will conquer but not before making him look good in the biggest match of the social media star's WWE career.

Day 1: vs. Kevin Owens

2 of 6

While Survivor Series is the next PPV after Crown Jewel, Reigns is unlikely to defend his title at the November 26 event, which will feature two WarGames matches that would overshadow a defense.

However, that event could be a great opportunity to help build the next challenger to The Tribal Chief. Whether it happens in WarGames or a traditional Survivor Series elimination match, The Bloodline need to face some opposition on this night.

One man stands out at the best to lead the charge against Reigns and The Bloodline: Kevin Owens. He was one of the first to face the wrath of The Head of the Table during his title reign, but both have evolved since.

If KO can make an impact against Reigns at Survivor Series, he would be perfectly set up to challenge him at Day 1 on New Year's Day.

They have chemistry to spare as rivals and can sell everyone on the idea that Owens could dethrone Reigns.

In fact, KO would be the only one who could take the WWE Championship off The Head of the Table and run with it to WrestleMania. However, this is another moment when The Bloodline will save Reigns and keep both titles on him.

Royal Rumble: vs. Karrion Kross

3 of 6

After Kevin Owens, the next man who has challenged Roman Reigns is Karrion Kross. He made it clear he wanted a shot at The Head of the Table on the night he returned to WWE.

While this could be an awkward story to tell with both men being heels, WWE showed last year in building Reigns vs. Seth Rollins that The Tribal Chief can adapt to any situation.

With Kross going into this match likely undefeated and using underhanded tricks to overcome The Bloodline, Reigns would be the babyface against a dangerous monster heel.

There is legitimate concern that The Herald of Doomsday cannot quite work at the main event level, but he will be tested by WWE multiple times before getting to Reigns. If he is not at the level the company expects, others can take his place.

However, this is a great opportunity to sell Reigns as a champion who takes on all kinds of threats. He can narrowly take down Kross with a Spear, surviving a uniquely tough fight in which he is the one on the defensive.

SmackDown: vs. Jey Uso

4 of 6

Throughout his 700-plus days as universal champion, no one has been a better rival to Reigns than his first challenger, Jey Uso. Even now, the tension between the two in The Bloodline is palpable.

On the Road to WrestleMania, WWE will need to settle this one way or the other. Reigns is unlikely to work another PPV between the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania, but he can still appear regularly enough on TV to sell a title defense on SmackDown.

Reigns vs. Jey one more time would be one of the most exciting matches WWE can put on during the build to this year's Show of Shows. Fans could genuinely buy into Uso pulling off the ultimate upset.

However, The Bloodline will likely side with Reigns in the end, especially Solo Sikoa and Sami Zayn, and that would be the difference-maker in this match.

Raw: vs. Matt Riddle

5 of 6

If SmackDown gets a title defense before WrestleMania, Raw should get one as well. While there are several exciting options, Matt Riddle is the only one with a clear story to tell right now.

The Original Bro previously agreed to a stipulation in which he could not challenge for the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship again if he lost, and he did lose that match.

However, WWE could use some semantic argument that Riddle could still challenge for just the WWE Championship. This would build intrigue on whether the company could split the world titles on the Road to WrestleMania.

However, Riddle is still not ready to be world champion, so he would fail once again.

Given Austin Theory is on Raw, he would likely consider another cash-in on Reigns on this night, and the tease would be interesting. But he's also not ready for that spot.

WrestleMania 39: vs. The Rock

6 of 6

Who will Reigns face at WrestleMania 39? There are a few intriguing possibilities.

A healthy Cody Rhodes would be a major challenger. Sami Zayn would be an interesting underdog, and Bobby Lashley or Drew McIntyre could fit the spot.

That said, this is going to be WrestleMania Hollywood, an event in California that will need a major star. All signs point to The Rock returning to put on one last dream match. This would be his true passing-of-the-torch moment.

Reigns has leaned into his Samoan heritage since his return to WWE, and he has required the entire Anoa'i family to bow down to him. There is one man who hasn't, and he is the only one who can truly challenge Reigns for that family title.

Imagine the pop if The Rock legitimately came back in the men's Royal Rumble and picked up the victory. Not everyone would be pleased, but it would be a moment no one would forget.

The Brahma Bull is the only man left who Reigns needs to fight to be fully established at the top.

It should not be as long a match as The Rock's battles with John Cena that left him injured. It just has to be a moment when the two exchange big moves and leave it all out in that ring.

After that, a deserving young star can pull off a shocking victory over Reigns without The Tribal Chief ever losing his aura as the top guy.
