Alabama vs. LSU: What LSU Fans May Claim After an Alabama National Title
Larry Burton (Syndicated Writer) If LSU loses to Alabama in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game, I can already hear their fans screaming the following on message boards:
1. LSU should be co-champion because they beat Alabama the first time.
Answer: So if a New England loses to New Orleans in the regular season and the loser goes on the win to win the Super Bowl, should New Orleans be a co-champion of the NFL? If Penn State loses to Michigan State, but Penn State go on to win the BCS championship game, should Michigan State get part of the championship?
Of course not. This thinking is just plain silly.
2. Les Miles has still proven that he's a better coach than Nick Saban.
Answer: Really? By what measure? I take championships over wins and losses any day.
3. Alabama was lucky to have gotten themselves in position for a rematch in the first place.
Answer: More lucky than LSU being the recipients of three missed field goals? Lucky because they earned the number two ranking after everyone else that could have been the opponent that simply threw up on themselves when they had to chance to seal the deal?
I guess winning all those other games didn't matter either.
4. LSU's tougher schedule means they were really the better team.
Answer: No winning the championship game made Alabama the better team.
5. Why don't we get a second chance like Alabama did to defeat them?
Answer: You had one, it was called the BCS championship game and you lost it.
6. Alabama was lucky, if they played eight more times, LSU would win seven of them.
Answer: We'll never know anything except you lost the one game that mattered the most.
7. LSU was bound to have a bad day sooner or later, but they're still a better team.
Answer: The best teams don't have a bad day in the national championship game.
Of course if LSU wins, it will be interesting to hear what the Alabama fans have to say. But that's another article for another day.
