UFC 141 Results: Diego Nunes Does Just Enough to Top Manny Gamburyan

Zachary D. RymerDec 31, 2011

The first bout of UFC 141 was a good one, as Diego Nunes and Manny Gamburyan squared off in a featherweight bout that went the distance and featured plenty of back-and-forth action.

If you missed watching it on Facebook, then you missed Nunes escape trouble time and time again. Ultimately, that proved to be enough for the judges, who awarded him a victory via unanimous decision.

Nunes set himself up pretty good in the first round, landing a handful of kicks to Gamburyan's side and lead leg. Gamburyan tried to get Nunes on the ground, but Nunes did a fine job of slipping out of his grasp.

By the time the first round was, over both fighters were on their legs, though one of Gamburyan's legs was glowing bright red from Nunes' kicks.

The first round went well, but Nunes very nearly met his end in the opening moments of the second round. Gamburyan landed a strong right hand directly to Nunes' face, and it appeared to daze him. With Nunes on his heels, Gamburyan pressed the attack, forcing Nunes into the fence.

Things seemed to be going downhill for Nunes when he let Gamburyan land a couple of hard knees, but he managed to slither his way out of Gamburyan's grasp, and the fight went on. From that point on, he went into survival mode, successfully avoiding takedown attempts by Gamburyan.

Nunes kept at it in the third round. He managed to keep his distance pretty well, only letting Gamburyan land a couple solid shots. Nunes also landed a couple low kicks, the second of which forced a brief stoppage.

As the third round wound to a close, Nunes looked to take advantage of Gamburyan's aggressiveness. He managed to land a couple more kicks, and once again refused to let Gamburyan take him down.

In the end, the refs had it 29-28 for Nunes across the board.

The win is Nunes' second in the UFC ranks, but it was clear while watching the bout that he still has room for improvement. He had the advantage when he was able to keep his distance from Gamburyan, and he did a fine job of eluding Gamburyan's takedown attempts, but he may not be so lucky against a better and more skilled fighter.

It is certainly worth noting that Gamburyan hasn't enjoyed much success in UFC competition.

Still, Nunes will take the victory. And he'll take the next one too, if and whenever it comes.
