Flyers Rangers 24/7: Peter Laviolette's Coaching Brilliance Shown in HBO Series

Nicholas GossDec 29, 2011

Episode 3 of HBO's 24/7 series with the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers was amazing, and during Wednesday's show, the brilliance of Peter Laviolette's coaching was shown.

After becoming the head coach of the Flyers in December of 2009, Laviolette has taken his team to the Stanley Cup Final and the second round of the playoffs in two seasons.

He has become an elite NHL coach and won a Stanley Cup in 2006 as coach of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Episode 3 on Wednesday began with Laviolette ripping into his Flyers players after two terrible periods against the Colorado Avalanche on Dec. 19.

Warning: the following video contains explicit language.

This is what a great hockey speech sounds like. He's right; the Flyers are way too good to struggle against teams like the Avalanche, who are inferior to Philadelphia.

Laviolette wants his guys to earn their second shift. That mentality is why he's a great coach. Laviolette doesn't give anything to his players; they have to earn it.

His leadership is a primary reason the Flyers play so well and respond positively against adversity. In the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Flyers were down 3-0 in the Eastern Conference semifinals to the Boston Bruins, then won four straight games to complete a comeback for the ages.

Last season, they battled poor goaltending to beat the Buffalo Sabres in seven games in the first round of the postseason.

Laviolette's players fight for him, and you can see it on the ice. The Flyers are a physical team that won't back down when the going gets tough. They stand up for each other, and opposing teams won't get away with bullying them.

The Flyers organization has found the perfect coach in Laviolette, who is absolutely the right man to lead Philadelphia into the future.
